I have to agree with some of the posts I have read here about the black coating that Benchmade puts on their blades
and that is is not real durable. That said it doesn't bother me but decided to try something.
I have a Grip, sheepsfoot with serrations, black blade, that I like a lot and carry for work every day. The blade coating has
shown some wear and though it is not a big deal I decided to strip the blade and go naked. The coating was not that
difficult to take off, I did it by hand with synthetic cleaning pads I use for copper tube soldering and then some lighter
polishing grades. Not a polished finish but a nice natural steel that I like. Touched up the edge and strop, shaved the hair
off my arm like I want. Could not be happier with the results. I think I will do the belt clip next and maybe the screws.
Will post some photo's when I am done. This blade really takes a great edge.

Cool... It is fun making the knife yours. I haven't had a coated blade for quite awhile. My first one was my first Mini Grip, in 440C, right after they came out.
I was afraid the coating would come off at first. But after carrying it, and using it hard every day, for about three years, it had held up very well.

Not sure what changed in the coating over the years. I like a black blade, if it holds up well. Otherwise, must as well just get an uncoated version

Some have seen this, some haven't. The BK coating failed on this knife, cutting cardboard it basically started flaking off. With the help of my friend Skimo the following 710 sans BK is the end result of a lot of hand work and it turned out really well. No worries either, sent it up to LifeSharp after the final polishing and was complimented on it's looks:

My suggestion after all of this? (Yes that's dust on the blade...) Send the knife up and have the blade replaced for $25. :D

25 bucks? That is a great bit of info. I did not realize I could do that. Your knife looks amazing. I am tempted to do my 710 like that also, but I will restrain.
I definitely will be doing the clip on my Grip, nice work and thanks for the photo's.
How did you polish the blade? Great job.
Frank.

Yep. As long as they they have blades, they will. You can even choose to go without serrations if you want

All handwork; 320 grit sandpaper and liquid brasso to pull the coating off, followed by 600, then 3M fine sanding sponges, finally polished with Flitz for the resulting high shine. I'll let go of others but not this knife after all that.

Blade looks great! I'm not too thrilled with the coating on my 940 and wish I would have gotten the satin blade instead.

I may send it back one day if the coating gets too bad.
