I have two questions......

I have had a BK-09 for about a year now and love it. I have done some mean batonning with it and it serves me well. I also love the way the BK-07 looks. I have competitor's version of the BK-02, so I am set with a good chopper (BK-09) and a versitle 5" blade as well. My question is: Would there be any reason to own the BK-07? I don't have a small fixed blade (my wife does however own the Izula :D) and I am trying to decide between the BK-14 and the BK-07. What are you thoughts?

Second question. I have made scales for a knife out of a red cutting board and the material is outstanding. Provides great grip and is VERY tough. Took 12 hours of hard labor to sand down to my liking. I did not use a saw at all.
I would like to do the same for my BK-09 but I am having a hard time figuring out how to cut the dimensional hole the for nut. Any suggestions?

Sorry this went long, thanks for your help!!

First things first, you can say you have an ESEE5, instead of a BK2. Its ok, we are all friends here. The BK7 is very universal as far as knives go. If you want to take a 1 blade solutions to the woods, that would be the one I would choose. It gives you a good blend between versitility and raw power, not the best at either, but it gives you a good middle of the road. RescueRiley can conduct a symphony with his, as well as many others. Good basic, all around knife.

The BK14 is a badass little knife, for its size. I EDC one, and you will never find me without it. Ever. It would be a good compliment to the BK9, as that is a usual setup I have carried, and it works well. To answer your question, YES, there is a reason to own both. I say for the money, get both.

Second issue. I used a small chisel to square the corners. drill the hole out for 1/4" and start small and test fit. I made some walnut grips, and that worked out well. A scallop bit would also do well

Good luck, I hope I helped, and post pics of you work. Pics or it didn't happen.:D

if you have a 9 (and a smaller knife), i'd get a 5 or something else before a 7

i'll probably be buying a 7 in the near future, because i don't have the current model, but so far, it's probably my least favorite of the line, but then, i haven't given it a solid chance either (because it's not my favorite, round and round)

It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to get a new Backer to pair/compliment your BK-9 then a BK-11 or BK-14 would work or one of the new Tweeners when they come out. Right now I have a Western 648 paired with my BK-9 and find that they compliment each other nicely. Pics of my combo below. If you want a Becker thats different from your Esee 5 or BK-9, the BK-7 would be a good option. Another option for general camp knife is the BK-5. Check out the Pass around thread at the top of the forum. Sweet knife!!

re: tweeners: you can't buy what's not available. buy now, cut now. hope for later. it could be a while, they're still doing prototypes...

Very true, thats one reason why I paired one of my Westerns with the BK-9.

Actually, it's a Ontario Afghan Ranger. 5" long, 1/4" thich blade, made of 5160 steel. Very comparable to the BK-02. I would have bought the BK-02 but my brother bought me this first. Would not feel right using something over what he bought me :o

i'd skip the bk-7 since it's too close to the bk-9 imho. i'd wait for the 'tweeners but it'll be awhile according to those in the know.

do you have a mora? rescueriley gave me one recently and i'm amazed what that cheap, little knife can do! very ergonomic handle, scandi grind and an edge that goes all the way down to the base of the handle makes for an amazing trap making/feather sticks/general carving knife. that or another scandi grind bushcraft knife would be a nice complement to the bk-9's pure hacking ability.

I am in the middle of making a knife myself out of a file... when that fails, I will look at a Mora !! :D

The BK-7 is a jack-of-all-trades knife. If you're going to carry more task-specific knives, you'd be better off pairing the BK-9 with a BK-14.

No worries, but I just wanted to let you know, you can bring up other knives, just don't dedicate a thread to them, unless you want them compared to Beckers:thumbup:

:D If you have a Becker 9 and a small knife, imo you can forego the 7. I have a 7 and I love it. IMHO a 7 serves me as a chopper, so I don't need a 9 or any other big chopper.:D

I had a BK9 and a BK7. I traded both away because 1) I didn't like the sheaths and I figured I would re-buy if and when KA-BAR changes them. 2) I didn't need a big chopper and 3) because I had so many 7" blades and I love my USMC KA-BAR.

Recently however, I made another trade to get the BK7 back in my hands and I swear it won't ever leave again. I forgot who it was who said it, but the BK7 is the "little black dress" of the line.

I think going out, the BK7 would be low on the list of knives to take if I was packing several. I'd take a BK11 for small chores and BK3 to beat the snot out of and a Mora stuffed deep in my bag for some kind of backup or as a loaner. If defense was an issue (there are mountain lions and bears out where I hike) the BK7 might get some more hip time.

BUT, the BK7 is the first knife I would probably pick if I could only have one knife. Over anything else, the BK7 would surely be my first go-to knife if the SHTF. I sleep with a knife by my bed. It's a BK7. Looking at her now in fact.

As for your nut-hole problem... since you are going into plastic, why not try getting a nut red hot, using some tweezers to hold it and melting the shape. Get in there with a little file to open it up a little. I've never tried it, and it might be a bad idea, so be sure to take plenty of pics if you try it.

Hey Bush......

I really like the BK9 paired with a Necker(BK11) or Eskabar(BK14) as a do it all duo.....The seven is a work horse but the chopping ability of the nine coupled with its relatively slender blade profile gives the slicability you normally associate with a machete giving you a very versatile blade..........The eleven and fourteen really shine at field crafty stuff and skinning and is strong enough to baton anything you can fit it to........Any how that is my two cents worth........

Thanks for the post and your interest....Hope you become a frequent visitor.....

All Best....

That's the tail chasing logic that I find myself following. My three main FB's are a Brute, Potbelly and a Campanion. Half of me says ''you don't need redundant similar blades'', while the other side wants them off and on. I'm thinking of just getting another BK-2 and more micarta for it because it's the most practical FB of the group for me, and I don't care for the sheaths on the larger blades. Lord only knows with me on any given day though. ;)

I like the BK-7 as s do all blade... You can chop with it (though not like a 9) you can carve with it (though not like a mora) While I feel it shines in no particular area, if i had to choose one knife and on eknife only to take for an extended wilderness trip in my area it would be the 7... (in fact I have done this several times )
However if you are using a 9.. than get yourself a nice multi function folder, like a victorinox rucksack, or a Mora knife. as a companion for the larger 9
