I heard Benchmade is not going to sale through distributors anymore

I got this email from 888knives and the bottom line is Benchmade prices are probably going way UP.

We regretfully announce that Benchmade has decided to discontinue offering their product line to distributors in an effort to control pricing.

This announcement recently came from one of our largest sources for their knives and they will no longer be able to offer the color classes (red, blue, black, gold) of knives offered by Benchmade. We will be discontinuing their line of knives once the remaining models are sold out. 888 keeps our pricing low by reducing our overhead and by not warehousing all the products we sell. We buy from distribution and let them warehouse our products for us. We are not permitted to become a direct dealer with Benchmade as they require a storefront in order to buy direct. We will still be offering all of the Heckler & Koch knives that Benchmade makes. Get your Benchmade while quantities last as prices are guaranteed to go up wherever these models are sold

Yeah, this sucks. I ordered a 555HG off of New Graham, but they were out of stock. It was $56 at New Graham and Knifeworks, and Knifeworks has raised the price to $60. New Graham hasn't raised the price, but they haven't received more stock either.

Oh well, guess I'm done with Benchmade.

Guess that's it for me too. Damn, losing Benchmade (effectively), and Ken Onion, all at once. There goes 75% of my knife buying just right off the top.

Benchmade have been on an apparent warpath to make sure I never buy one of their knives again. Well done, the deal is fully sealed, now.

In a nutshell, the fact that we're even discussing this is not good news. Even if we're blowing it out of proportion we still have enough movement to stir us up. I much prefer stability in life. Too bad that has become a stigma.

Benchmade have been trying to control the resale price of their knives for years. This is just a continuation of that effort. I think it is going to cost them business, but I guess they figure they can make all the sales they require through their dealers that have storefronts.

BM has been funny about sales for a while now.

its been a while since i bought a BM, last one was a axis AFCK (which i liked) and a skirmish (which i didnt) imho they are right on the edge of being overpriced right now, some of them anyway, a big or moderate increase would make 'em cost more than they are really worth, imho anyway, to be honest they havent come out with anything which really grabbed me for a while, they are well made though with good F&F,

i was just gonna start a a thread like this- i heard about it 3 weeks ago-but i also got the 888 email today too..BM is just screwing themselves over-fine, it ain't gonna last...ESPECIALLY not in this economy, which may be the reason that they're doing it now...i understand why they're doing it, and it makes sense, but it's just NOT going to work out- I say everyone hear at BF and any other knife enthusiast should all do something together to show BM that we're not gonna put up with it-anyone else?

I'm with you. I have a 555HG on order. If I have to pay retail for it (or higher than the $56 at which I ordered it when it was "out of stock"), I'm not buying it. Forget it.

thank you-i say we really do something-i'm gonna make a poll to see who all would be willing to put a little effort into this, and then go from there

Whew! What a relief! Now I can use the money I was gonna use for a Nitrous Stryker on the new ZT 0350! Or maybe that Cocobolo Lone Wolf Double Duty I've been eyeing. This has reduced my stress level by 33%!
