Here’s a picture of a some scantily clad young ladies being checked out by a beach cop. This one was taken around 1920. The hem of the bathing suit couldn't be more then 6" above the knee.

I came across this site while looking for something else. It has hundreds of photos from the 1800's to the 1950's. Neat stuff if it interests you.

Too bad so many Americans still think like that....

I myself, choose not to live in a window-blinded world.

Interesting. That job is still there as the department still exists, but that particular assignment has faded into history. So too has that beach.

Examine the background. That is the Washington Monument. Blow up the photo. That is (still) the badge of the Washington, District of Columbia (DC) Metropolitan Police Department. The photo was taken from Haines Point. That beach is now concrete walkways with very limited actual access to the water. Since the taking of the photo something called the U.S. Park Police was created and they now have patrol responsibility in that particular narcotics infested, high crime park. I believe there is still a spot where you can rent paddle boats and occasionally you see people fishing for carp and mud cats around there, but it is no longer a water body you want to swim in (not that your wallet (or your car) would still be there on the land when you emerged. At least once a week one reads of some jogger or tourist being attacked or mugged down there. Homicides too. After dark one avoids it totally.

In 1986 or 87 my son went to DC for the national Boy Scout jamboree. I happened to be at the Xerox training center in VA that week, so I drove into DC to meet him. I went along with the group for the day. We left on a bus going back to GWU at night and we passed through a gauntlet of some pretty nasty young black men. They pounded on the bus and yelled obscenities. The driver would not exceed 5 mph until we left the area. He told us that if he hit one of these people, none of us would leave in one piece. A fine example of our nation’s capitol. I doubt that it has gotten much better.

I used to have this site bookmarked, but lost it somewhere along the way, thanks for posting it. I really enjoy the old pictures.
