I just bought a Kershaw JunkYard Dog knife with flipper opening, model 1720. The blade is unserrated, 3" long and made out of Sandvik 13C26 Stainless Steel. I paid $29 for it. Did I do ok? Do any of you have this knife? How do you like it? What about the steel? How does it compare with 440C?

$29 looks like a good price. I don't own one but I've been looking at one myself. All the reviews I've seen are very favorable. 13C23 Sandvik behaves quite similar to 440C in my humble opinion. AUS 8, 8Cr14MoV, and Sandvik 13C23 *seem* to be compatible to 440C. As always, heat treats can make a difference.

Sandvik 13C26 is designed to take a razor edge. It has a lower carbide content than 440C, so the abrasion resistance is lower, but the edge is said to retain its razor sharpness for longer than 440C because the carbides don't rip out of the edge. So it should retain a very fine edge longer than 440C, but 440C should retain a "working edge" longer.

I have not tried 13C26. I have tried AUS8 and 8Cr14MoV. Both of those showed significantly lower edge retention than 440C when I did side-by-side manila rope cutting tests.

My CS Recon I is also AUS 8 and I've been a little disappointed in the edge retention. But. It's still a tough little knife. I wish it came in a spear point plain edge.

I think dog of war has done a test with the 13C26 in your exact folder and found it more wear resistant than VG-10 when cutting manilla rope. He reprofiled both to the same degrees and performed the test, and loves the sandvic steel.

I got the kershaw groove and it has 13c26.
Let me tell you that steel takes a real fine edge and holds it.
I would say that its right up there with sog's aus8, when it comes
to edge retention.

I reprofiled the blade my groove and i have been able to whittle hair and
push cut .003" paper.

sanvic 13c26 is a great steel for the money:) just my 2 cents

My thoughts exactly. I love and have had nothing but good experience with Kerhsaw´s Sandvik steel.

I do own a Sog in AUS-8, and the sandvic performs MUCH better IMO. It is in a different league.

I'd really like to see a pic of your reprofiled Groove if you've got one!

I have played with the JYDds and was very impressed with them, particularly the CB model. I think you'll be very pleased.

Sandvik 13c26 holds an edge just fine for me and I'd be happy to buy more knives in it. It's really all the steel I need...I have plenty of knives in S30V and D2 and really, that's just icing...all I ask for is 440C/VG10/13C26.

I though I was the only one that liked to compare 13C26 to VG-10! I was previously shy about saying it thinking of the ragging I would have to endure.

Have had one for several months now, it is a great little knife, cool looking, and cuts well, you should be very happy. Tim Galyean design, very nice.
