I just bought a PE K390 Police - better serrated? Best serrated Spyderco model and steel (specifically from Seki, but you can suggest others too)

I just ordered a Police in K390 after loving my Dragonfly wharncliffe, and was tripping over not having purchased a serrated version for a second, because I really wanted to try a serrated EDC knife, but I read that K390 likes a nice polished edge, so maybe that'll be okay. I was thinking though, I still do want to try a serrated edge, as so far, the only serrated edges I have, are my Military in 440V but I do not carry that a ton because of how historical it is, same for ATS-55 Civvie, and an old G-2 Snap-It, which I have not figured out what I want to do with yet. What I carry are my Matriarch 2 which doesn't see a lot of use, and my Cricket or Dodo, which I've only recently started using, the Cricket more often, and been loving the reverse-S for utility.

I was worried also, about the Police being a blade I intend to keep razor sharp, put a wave on, and use as a "do anything" knife, from most cutting chores to a possible SD knife, the serrations perhaps snagging in clothing. This is not such a big worry for a Ma2 on a ring. This is the smallest of my concerns though, I'm more interested in performance here, so tell me if I have the K390 all wrong here in terms of serrations, or my ideas about serrations are wrong. I've heard of the edge on serrated knives lasting many times longer. I do like my half-serrated Leatherman, too but I don't carry as much after becoming a SAK addict.

But, what models, particularly out of Seki, but any models, would you rec for serrated edge, steel too? The wharncliffe Endela kind of piqued my interest a little, as do some LC200N knives. But I was wondering if I could do better, leading me back to the K390. Then I think, I do not have a Salt knife, indeed. Not that I need one, I love carbon steels. I have an aluminum BD1N PM2 that I could use out on the ocean if I pick fishing back up, but then again I've only seen BD1N hold up in the kitchen sink, not the ocean. Anything I am missing, anything I am not thinking of that I should be? Also, shapes! What blade shape do you like your serrated knife in?

Another question - Does the Police have a 12mm hole like the Endura?

The P4 has a 14mm Spyderhole.

The teeth on the serrated version are more rounded and less prone to snagging than any I've seen on other Seki models.

I believe you are over thinking pretty much everything. There is only so much you can learn by asking questions and sorting through the opinions of other people. Sooner or later, you just have to try things for yourself. What works for me might not work for you, and vice versa.

K390 rusts for me, just by looking at it. And I like liners. So I did this, perfect for the few times that I need serrations:

There are the classic Military and Chinook 1 with serrations and in 440V that you might want to consider.

Roland.

I’ve been using a fully serrated endela in vg10 at work. Its been holding up great. I do landscaping and gardening professionally.

I have many serrated spydercos and nothing comes close to the police 4. Those shallow serrations coupled with the thinly ground ffg give it crazy cutting power with no snags. I really think they are the best teeth spyderco has ever done.Get one.

I have an Atlantic Salt and a Carribbean Salt, both sheepfeet in LC200N. Both are chisel ground at about 20 degrees. Out of the box, both would push cut paper using the bottom of a gullet. The Atlantic has slightly deeper gullets and pointier teeth. It snags a lot and dulled about as quickly as H1. The Carribbean Salt cuts better and has better edge retention. But it hurts my eyes to look at it.

That tears it, serrated K390 it is!

Yeah, surely, I just like to hear what people think, what models to check out that I may have neglected or passed over in the past.

I personally would use the 440 military.
Most people want latest and greatest, I wouldn't worry about historical significance here. MO.

Serrated edge does hold an edge very long. In a self defense position I'm not convinced that you would notice a snag.
I would think your adrenaline would defeat that. Also a Serrated edge would give more cutting power.

A SD situation doesn't Happen often if at all. If that weighs on you carry a dedicated knife.

I have a pe Caribbean and love that knife, I like the scale pattern though.
I'm not sure which blade style I like best, I have high hopes for the pacific salt to be a favorite.

Good luck

I do want to use the 440V Military. I really do like it a lot. I'm just a little apprehensive to carry it as my first serrated knife that isn't a Leatherman or a Cricket, maybe too apprehensive. Oh, and while they do want late and great, this is the first powder metallurgy knife in production - "S60V"! I would imagine that would have some collector value, certainly did to me. I'm not a real big collector person anyways, though, so this pristine-ness really doesn't make sense from me. I got the knife for a good price, both that and an ATS-55 Civvie for probably like $150 each give or take ten bucks. People who know really do praise the S60V, and now that the proper abraisives are well known, I should be able to sharpen it up just fine when needed. It was people sharpening on alum oxide on the first powder metallurgy knife they had, claiming that this knife is un-sharpenable.

The serrations on this model (K390 Police) are particularly smooth compared to average Spyderco serrations, seems less likely to snag than average, even. I know SD encounters are rare, that's why I specifically prioritized that low compared to performance, but the two qualities seem to have things in common. If it won't snag in regular rough cutting, it won't snag cutting through denim or something. Yeah, I'm confident in the serrations on, say, the Matriarch 2, so these ones will surely do.

The reason I got onto that topic with this knife at all is because I like to feel confident that I have an ideal cutting and SD tool in a "do-everything" knife as this should be. For example, the Yojumbo gives me this confidence, I feel safe and capable of cutting chores. It's just that tip's thin size scares me a little fo chores. I'd like to see if the Police tip is better. My Mickey Yurco re-ground Endura also gives me this feeling (Janich-style wharncliffe and a wave, who'da thunk the kitchen would be my most used place for this super-tactical knife?. However, I wonder if the Police 4 may not only be a better tool, but if it's blue teal color, much adored by the women I know, will make it easier to pull out in public without being self-conscious, as opposed to an all-black, mean razor-blade profile of the Yurco Endura.

Not that I put too much stress on the tip anyways, but say I wanna cut through a bucket, as has been described as a breeze with K390 serrated Police. I actually have both in the mail, because KC did not process my cancellation of the plainedge in time, so I will be able to look at both. Cool stuff.

Thank you

Who prefers the tip of the classic police over the FFG, by the way? What are the advantages of it, it seems more acute but weaker, would that be an accurate statement? I always thought it would be kind of cool to laser-etch POLICE and, once I have the skills to be confident in doing so, make a lil swedge, in a FFG model, just as tribute. I really don't like most branding... but the Police is the exception to the rule. I do like that one, yessir.

The Police 4 is, I think, very close to perfect for me. This is the smallest carry I've had in as long as I can remember (in terms of amount of knives), just two knives. Usually it's at least three, because mandatory SAK, mandatory Matriarch-2 (or something as potent), regular quality pocketknife, and could go up to four with a second, "beater" knife or a smaller "gentleman knife".

My first real serrated knife for carry (I'll be carrying this every day for a while), inspired by my love of the K390 Wharnie Dragonfly, I always wanted a knife that I could do most tasks that don't need a fixed blade, that can cut like a chainsaw and still make me feel safe walking around. This replace both the Matriarch 2 and PM2 in my pocket today. Just a do-it-all pocketknife in what is so far my favorite supersteel. I'll need to use it more, but it's less scary than some of my smaller Spydercos, despite being more potent and longer. I'd pull this out before I'd pull out my Jandura, black, looking like a razor blade. Chicks love the color on this, most of my stuff, in fact. That goes a long way in acceptability.

This is such a great in-between because it's smaller than my next-biggest serious knife, a CS Tanto Voyager which I can't pull out in public, or similar smaller Spydercos that I love but must be cautious about using, like the Yojumbo or my aforementioned Jandura.

Took a second pic with the plainedge, because I ordered it before I decided on serrated, and couldn't get it cancelled before it shipped. I'd think the lack of Boye dent would be an issue, but it's not. I'm not one of those people who's hand doesn't fit the Endura, but this fits better than the Endura.

Man I couldn't agree more with this! I didn't know they made a fang for it, or that for an endura?

Yessir, went to go see them just the other month! Was very, very cool. Glad to see a fellow fan! 🤘

Front side, the one visible, is, well, if you know you know, and on the back, there's a coffin-shaped memorial patch of Pelle, birth-death date, so that whole bit is kind of a tribute. Should have flipped it for the second pic! Will for tomorrow's EDC, ha.

It is an Endura fang, but it fits the Police LW, too. 5x5 makes a wave just for the Police, but the Wise Men waves best!
