I just bought my first "survival" knife and I chose a BK2

I'm new to the forums. I've always had an interest in survival/bushcraft activities. I knew I couldn't do any of it without a decent knife. It took me a long time to decide which knife I wanted but the price and the heft of a BK2 made it seem like common sense, so here I am.

I see a lot of you stripping the coating off your Beckers. I'm curious as to why you would do this. I have to admit they do look nice like that with micarta handles but don't you get rust issues? Thanks for the input.

Rust was not an issue as long as you take care of the knife. I just cleaned and oiled it after use. I stripped mine simply so I don't lose it at night. Some like it better that way, some others just don't like the coating.

Welcome and good choice I strip mine because it gives the knife less resistance when cutting plus I like the look.

Excellent choice. Welcome.
I stripped my 7 because it was an older roll stamped one with the epoxy coating that Ka-Bar does, and after some use the coating was flaking off. I didn't like random patches of bare steel on my knife, so I just stripped it all off. It alo gives me a bit less resistance in cutting that way.
I don't have any issues with rust, I just give it a light coat of oil every now and then.

The BK2 is the gateway drug to a lifelong Becker addiction Stripping is not a prob. Like others have said. Just take care of it. And over time it will form a patina that is actually a light layer of protective rust. And the patina looks really nice! I am assuming that by your name, you are associated with dentistry?
Balding

Welcome byteblock!
And congrats on one of the baddest knives in the biz!
Mine is stripped. I just wipe it with olive oil now and then.
I use it for food prep once in awhile. No rust issues here.

The BK-2 is a fine choice, fer sher

Enjoy it! As for stripping the blade...in theory, you get less cutting resistance without a coating. In reality, I just like the look of naked carbon steel. It take a little more work to maintain it, but if you clean, dry, and oil it there will be no problems. On the other hand, if you use it in the field, put it away wet, and pull it out a month later, you'll have some work to do.

Welcome and excellent choice on the BK2. The 2 was my first Becker. Its a tank and there really isnt any type of survival knife function it wont perform, you wont be sorry. I think that stripping is certainly a matter of preference, some guys like to "pimp" out their knives, stripping, mods etc, some guys dont. It does make a bit of a difference when cutting. I stripped mine because I liked the look of it stripped. I havent had any rust issues, keep it clean and dry, hit it with a little oil every now and then and you will be fine, IMO. I use Rem Oil but any quality oil would work. If you are going to use it for food prep, mineral oil is best as it isnt toxic. Enjoy it!

BK2 is 1/4" thick.

Even if it did get rusty, it would be a long time before it rusted clean through.

Gotta love the BK2...it's the "Jack of All Trades...Master of None" in the Beckers IMO. It can do pretty much anything you will need it to !

Not much out there, that can beat it.

For an all around, no nonsense, beat it like you stole it blade, you could do no better.

Welcome and thanks for sharing with us, I look forward to seeing more.
