I just called the small plain Jane Sebbie a bargain!

Firstly, I am not funded well enough to be a 'player' in the CRK arena. No spalted wembezi wood/CF/Gold inlay CRKs for me. I did celebrate my first SS retirement disbursement by buying a CRK/WC 'StarTac' Umnumzaan as my first CRK and finest (ie, most expensive) knife ever. That was nearly two years ago - and followed by a Nyala and, last July, a small plain Jane Sebenza in S35VN. It followed my many previous attempts at a 'Gent's knife'. Actually, it capped the long term search - sadly, after I had spent the GNP of Tchad in acquiring my many examples. To have just bought the CRK to begin with would have saved considerable time and money.

Why mention this here? I, too, was a lurker - and nearly chased away from the CR kinves due to the super fine examples depicted here. I just want my fellow poorly-funded lurkers to know that a plain Jane Sebbie is still a Sebbie - a CRK! It's worth saving for, that is for sure. Find a dealer - go to a show - fondle one. You'll find a way to afford one. I have to go - it's Saturday and the better panhandling spots under the freeway go early...

Thanks Stainz, CRK are something I keep looking at, but just don't ever seem to want to "bite the bullet".

As I live in UK there's not many (or any) opportunities to actually handle one before taking the plunge. The one I'm drawn to is the small Sebbie Insingo. Maybe one day. Glad you like yours, hope you have many years enjoyment with it!

with 3 CRks i say that you are a player:)
i have 3 sebbies and they're all plain jane too.
micarta is the only embelishment i could get used to but other than that, graphics, damascus and all that stuff isn't for me!
too beautiful to put scrathes on ;)

Totally agree with you! I own 2 plain jane large regulars and one plain small 21. The plain sebenzas have always been my favorites :)

Be careful one thing leads to another I started with one small plain 21 then I bought a large plain, now I have a Star-Tac, unique graphic, CCG graphic, and a insingo. CRK's are like Lay's potato chips you can't have just one.

I think the plain Jane sebenzas are perfection in minimalism and simplicity. Two titanium slabs and a steel blade.

I started with a plain Jane small sebenza 21, then got a large. Sold the small and recently got a mammoth bark and Damascus mnandi. Trying to resist a wood-inlaid small sebenza right now.

It's hard to beat the plain jane Sebenza. Great post:thumbup:

That's it, no matter if it's a super fine example or plain Jane, they're both the same quality knife....one is just embellished, but they both function exactly the same, plus you save hundreds.

I just made the plunge to purchase my first Sebenza today. Actually purchased it within the hour. I was going to get the plain small 21 but decided on the carbon fiber/titanium version. I hope I made the right choice!

After playing around buying a bunch of mid-techs ($200-$300) of various popular folders, I looked around and that's exactly what I had. And all that time I figured I couldn't begin to afford a CRK. Reason finally settled in; I sold some stuff and I found an older ANIB Umnumzaan. I've carried it since I got it.
Then, last week I stumbled onto a NIB small Sebbie with lignum vitae inlay. Absolutely beautiful. Not sure whether I'll carry it. If I don't, I'm sure my 40-yr-old boys will volunteer.
And, several days ago, there was this large Classic Sebbie, slightly used, that I couldn't resist. So it should arrive here perhaps on Monday or Tuesday. I am telling myself I really don't need more than three. I feel blessed. From the posts above, it sounds like I'm in good company.

+1

I have a large plain regular and a small one. They are indeed the very definition of elegant design - totally functional with everything you need and nothing you don't.

Stainz,
Hope you enjoy a prosperous day under the freeway today.
What an interesting and original way to fund another CRK. Too many folks seem to spend retirement in idleness.
I wish you every success and a good day! :)

Stainz - I had a good chuckle over that!! July took a huge bite out of my pension, having purchased 8 new knives (including 3 CRKs and a custom Shirogorov). I have a friend in Florida who checks my knife collection photos regularly to see if I am exercising even the slightest amount of self-control. She was grilling me today about my latest two acquisitions and I told her that it was almost time for me to head to the soup kitchen for my next meal!!

You guys are too funny. So that's why people panhandle around me. Not because they're homeless. They're saving for a sweet blade :)

I'm finding myself owning fewer, yet more pricey knives. Ever since I got my Sebenza, I compare everything to it and expect similar performance. I just got my 2nd Sebbie and like it just as much.

A macaroni and cheese diet for a couple of months ain't half bad......when you can open the boxes with another new Sebbie you got with the $$$ saved. :D

I just bought my first (a large plain Sebenza 21) a few days ago and can honestly say that I will no longer 'impulse buy' the many folders I purchased in the past. I will save for Sebenzas and have fewer (and better) knives. I will also sell the other knives that I have to help fund an additional Sebenza. I'm not being a knife snob...but I've come to realize just how good they are.

The only exception is the serrated Pacific Salt by Spyderco...those are great for their rust proof properties and the fact that the serrated edge is just scary good in H1 steel. But I view that knife as a niche knife and not a true EDC (for me anyway). It's a great jogging knife and great around water of course. So, I guess what I'm saying is that it's Sebenzas and Salts for me! At least I now have the knife aspect of life figured out...still working on the rest. (LOL)
