I just castrated my Mini-Commander

I recently purchased a Mini Commander BT. I really like the look of the knife, and the handle is fantastic. The wave hook, though, was really aggravating me. When it works, it tears up pants, even 5.11 Tactical pants, and when it does not work it either hangs in your pocket, or opens halfway leaving you to cut your finger.

So I took it to a bench grinder and castrated that bad boy. Now it is much more friendly, and performs all of its tasks just as well.

I personally prefer them w/o the wave, except for the CQC7 and the m-wave. The waveless 8 is really quite something....

It didn't take me long to realize the wave wasn't for me. I think it's great, but I have no use for it. Dremel fixed it:

I have no issues with pants tearing or the knife opening in the pocket... And I love my wave. If I didn't I would get a Spyderco Military and carry tip-down.

I find the wave works best from the back pocket, you automaticly twist the knife as you deploy it so the pocket wraps round the kife and gives a solid deploy every time. I carry an E2D in my right front all the time so have no room for the ernie.

Does removing the wave void your warrenty ? any one know ?

Your mod looks good.

I would have to think, however, that if you cut a part off of a product, that it would fairly well nullify the warranty.

I bet Emerson would still sharpen it for you, but consider your warranty voided.

Nonetheless, I like it.

On the Mini Commander, I really like the wave as a place to position my thumb (with the wave, I think this is one of the better Emerson handles). As an opening mechanism, I think it is mostly gimmick, though I know some love it.

Nice job, you'd never know the wave was there!
Off topic but does anyone know a site that sells those wheel type thumb-openers? i want to mod a lockblade to thumb opener but most of the thumbopeners i see are those "one-hand bandit" style buttons that attach on the side of the blade. I want one like in your pic, a disc that sits on top of the blade.
:)

If I were so inclined, I'd just get a suitable washer and screw from the hardware store, and drill and tap the blade. Fashionable functional. :D

if you have a lathe you could make the thumb discs fairly easily. get some 7mm or so round bar stock. knurle the bar on the lathe if you have the equipment. then you can just cut the discs you need off the bar. dress the edges, drill a hole in it and stick it on your knife. might be a bit fidely but if youv got the equipment or access to it, it should be ok

mini-com: OUUUUUUCHHHHH! why the hell did you lop off my thing???!!!!

bodromarsh: cos your thing was always deploying my thing before I was even ready for any action....

hehe....seriously, nice work there. very clean. even looks like it's been recoated. I think you could use some black krylon to paint that portion.
