I finally picked up a BK16 a couple weeks ago. I dig it. Not the finest or fanciest, it is what it is. Size, shape, stock thickness, flat grind, it really is close to what I would call "just right". Surprisingly, I don't see much out there to match it at a similar price. I've had my eye on the BK16 for quite a while for these reasons. Well, it didn't take long handling the knife for something to really rub me wrong. You know, those crevices around the handle hardware? Yes, those! The thought of gunk and blood and guts and all type of yuck getting stuck in there... Well, I couldn't stand it. I just kept thinking about it. It was driving me nuts! So, I ordered some of the TKC scales. They're pretty sweet!
Any of you guys ever thought the same thing? What did you do about it? So, if you agree or disagree or are just dying to call me a sissy, let's hear it. Pics encouraged.

Congrats on your 16! Nice setup!
I’ve thought about it. I ended up just going with stainless hardware and kabar‘s micarta. If the yuck gets bad I’m going to do just what you’re going to do,take the scales off and wash it all in hot water and dish soap. If your knife starts to stink bad, yuck probably seeped through the rough coating under the scales and into the cut-outs.

Thanks!
Yeah, I even thought about epoxying the scales on but I think I'll leave it alone for now. The TKC scales are really well designed. There are steel pins that go through the screw holes in the tang making it impossible for the scales to slide around.
It looks as if the gaps between the hardware and Becker micarta are less than with the original plastic.

Thanks!

Don't glue em! I was just messing with you :) your Knife with the TKC scales will serve you well for many years.

Haha!
I actually bought them with the intentions of bonding it all together. Well, what I really wanted was to make some maple burl scales then epoxy and pin em on, but I don't have access to a band saw right now and I don't have the patience to do the profile with a belt sander or Dremel. Anyway, after opening the TKC scales and checking them out, I decided to just leave them alone. I also like the idea of being able to strip and start over down the road if I want.
