Well I got an issue of Blade on Friday and after a few reads, I headed out to the shop and grabbed a bar of 5160 :) Not an exact copy but close enough to fulfill a knifemaker's fantasy. I also used G10 slabs instead of the cord/tape wrap of the movie knife. Sure is a biggun! 12inches of 1/4in thick steel ahead of the handle. Massive an applicable adjective :) Everything was done up rough with a 36 grit belt on the blade and the handle slabs were sanded to a whopping 80 grit! Figured I'd stay with the theme of a quickly assembled blade for use not looks. After a quick Scotchbrite buffing, I applied a little(OK a lot) of cold blueing and sharpened it up. Big heavy razor now :D Glad I decided to make one. Certainly going to be an only child as that is a lot of steel to grind. Can't wait till the movie comes out!

Nice. Not a knock-off though.I make a bainite san mai blade similiar in shape and design.Seen many others do it too.:)

Bill...that looks GREAT! would this sale for the same price as the real one? ;)

I wish!!! :D No plans on selling this one right now. Just gonna play with it a while when playing Rambo in the woods :) I do like the general blade shape though. Might adapt it to a slightly shorter blade though. It's real close to too heavy at 12inches. 10 would be pretty sweet though.

Working out and steroids will get you the Rambo biceps :) Swinging the knife just plasters a smile across yer mug!

thats one huge hallow grind. whats the width of the blade

This is a full flat grind :) She's about 2 3/8in wide at the widest point.

Hey Bill, thats a great looking chopper :thumbup::thumbup: I love it :thumbup::thumbup:

Don't feel bad, the cover pic inspired a couple other guys that I know too. A fella that I share knifemaking information with through email and ME :D ;) When I saw my penpals design I commented how it looked like the one on the cover of BLADE and he sent me pics of another that a guy used in the World Championship Cutting Competition (can't recall whos it was though). It had the same lopped off looking tip, so.... fwiw, I don't think Gil Hibbin is the first to make a blade that looked like that ;)

In the article it is mentioned that Sly wanted a blade like he had been seeing in the cutting competitions. Also makes sense as the story takes place in Burma so having a Chinese sword point works :)

Bill,
grea post and great looking blade

I been thinking of making me one as well...
