Well I have been working on a couple disc grinder ideas, I brought home a wood lathe with a 9" sanding disc that I have been thinking about how to properly modify it to make knives. So tonight I was moving some things around the garage when I just couldn't take it anymore! That grinder sitting there, not having been used in years, was calling to me! So with no reverse or second faceplate I only really have one option: chisel grinds. So I had this old parting tool made by keen kutter that lost its handle years ago and had been just kicking around the back of the drawer. I'm going to make it a knife, and I did.

Slim kiridashi or cabinet makers marking knife, could be either one. Using a power grinder is an order of magnitude better than files and sand paper! I'm never looking back.

Let me know what you think of this little shop knife.

5.2" overall
~.125" thick (very slight distal taper from .135 to .110)
unknown steel, being treated as 1080. Torch hardened the tip only and quenched in olive oil. File skated on the edge after decarb.

Fresh out of the oil. And it is in the oven tempering at 400*F as I type this.

Using this thing is so much fun! I know its not bolted down, and the motor is in the debris path, and no reverse but it makes me want to make knives so much more!

i will update tomorrow when I finish this thing.

Done with the first tempering cycle. Man I love this color, wish it would hold up to use. Time for bed, will temper it again in the morning and start final sanding.

That is nice! Looks clean! I wish there was a way to keep those tempering colors permanently, they look so cool. It is fun to put the knife in some white vinager, it makes the color dissapear instantly like magic, lol.

Keep up the good work!

Hey Xander,
I might have found a face plate for you for the other side. I talked with a friend that has the same lathe as ours and he doesn't use the other plate (he only turns). He said he would dig around this afternoon and see if he can find it. If he does I will let you know on this thread. the blade looks great by the way.

For a knife you are keeping, if you want to keep the temper colors, try a coat of clear spray paint. Doesn't hold up the best, but i do it when i heat color tattoo machines and it works pretty good.

All done. I did not spend tons of time on the finish, hand rubbed 400# on the body, 800# on the first bevel, and 2500# polish on the edge. It is shaving sharp.

Check it out...

I left some of the pitting in a few spots, mostly because I didn't want to put that much work into it. This is all that is left of the Keen Kutter logo on the back.

I also left the heat coloring on the spine for just a bit of character. Makes a great little detail knife, like an Exact-o blade. Holds a reasonable edge as well.

Thank for all the kinds words guys.

Dan, that is awesome! Thanx! Either on this thread or shoot me an email to fast14riot@gmail.com, let me know what he wants for it. It should be 3/4"-16 TPI/left hand thread.

I will send email later, but got you covered. You can email me at dandk(at)consolidated(dot)net with your address. Don't worry about cost, I'm just glad to help out.

Well I got a sheath done for this little knife. Instead of starting a new thread I thought I would put it here. This is my first sheath. It needs work, but it is my first.

Looking really cool! I like the slim look of it all. Orange and grey go well with the knife!
