Yup- I drank the BK-9 Kool Aid!

I realized that I have read and heard too much good hype about the BK-9 and assume that I am missing out on a good thing. So I pulled the trigger on one today and now get to wait for UPS to deliver, hopefully this week. I am pretty excited especially since I really like the 7 and the 9 has this reputation for being superior to the 7 in every way!

Initial plan is to acid etch the BK&T logo and BK-9 markings, then strip the finish, add a vinegar patina and a new set of dyed-micarta and stainless hardware from Tomars and then figure out sheath options.

If anyone wants to show off their customized Kings, please feel free to post pics on this thread so I can enjoy Becker Envy.

Attached is a current "Becker Family Portrait" taken on my back porch yesterday afternoon- I should have been mowing grass but fiddling with knives is way more fun!

Long Live the King! Have fun customizing your King; the possibilities are endless. Search the threads and you will see what many of the men on the forum have done to personalize their Kings.

Nice family. Good pick-up. I'm sure you'll love the King. My wife asked me what I wanted for my Bday and I still have yet to decide if I want a 24, 15 or 9.

You should have mowed your grass with your Beckers and then you would have killed 2 birds with one stone! ;)

The 9 is a great blade. It excels at a lot when you learn that it is more than a chopper even though chopping is something that it does well. You made a good choice.

I have not customized my BK9... I am letting it customize itself. ;) doesnt mean I wouldnt love some Micarta for it... This is an old pic but it sees almost daily use... its just that handy.

Awesome, the King was my first step into Beckerland and I love mine so far.

I'm in the process of doing the basics to start: handle mod, stripping the finish and etching the logo.

I tried to etch the logo using ferric chloride, but wasn't getting the results I was looking for fast enough. So, this morning I took an AC transformer and made an impromptu electro-etcher which really burned the logo in nice and deep. I'll have pics of my etching job and handle stippling later.

Is there a dedicated thread for finish stripping and logo etching?

If so can someone post the link. I have looked but haven't found one?

I haven't seen a dedicated thread either. I know there are threads dedicated to showing off the knives, custom versions, even threads dedicated to a particular model.

The 9 is one of my six favorite Beckers. That is until I get the 15. Then it will be one of my seven favorite Beckers. I stripped mine recently. I didn't etch the logos, and they still look great, but I've lost logos on other strips, so take that with a grain of salt. One thing I do with all my Beckers after I strip them is to spray the handle that will be covered by the scales with a clear fast drying enamel paint. It might not be useful at all, but it keeps me from wondering if there's any rust going on under the scales. I know it sounds silly to strip the paint and then paint them, but it keeps me happy.

OK the King arrived last night and all I can say is WOW! This is absolutely the bad mo-fo of blades that I was hoping it to be. I wish I had been a store nearby that stocked Becker blades so that I could see and hold them, I would have gone straight for the BK-9 in the first place. When I bought my first bk7 this spring, I was expecting it to have the same heft and feel of a bk2 with just a longer blade and I was a bit surprised that it really didn't have the same "feel" as the 2, and when I pulled the king out of the box, I was rewarded with a big heavy knife that I can't wait to use for brush clearing and camping, no doubt that this is my new fave Becker! Long live the king.

If you have smaller hands, like me, you will want to do something about the grip. Those scales are contoured nicely but they are just too slick for my tastes. I stippled mine.
