After carefully reviewing the suggestions and comments from the CAD model that I posted a few weeks ago...here is what I built.

Similiar to the knife makers attachment, it clamps onto the drive shaft housing and uses the 5" contact wheel. I decided to try the 5" wheel instead of the 8" wheel because I feel that this attachment is more productive as a finishing tool rather than a heavy grinding tool...and hence lower belt speeds are needed. I've been running it all afternoon on the single speed 1hp machine in the photos. I'm very happy with the speed.
Note that the center roller is adjustable and remove-able. It has been placed as close as possible to the contact wheel to provide a the shortest span possible. It can be adjusted in and out.
Here is a photo with the center wheel removed.

With this setup, the 8" idler wheel was used. The 8" contact wheel and this attachment can be interchanged while still using the 8" idler wheel and no other adjustments needed to take up belt slack for tension.
I've only played with it for a few hours and so far I'm very pleased. I think I gone as far as I can with the testing...it does everything that I expected. It is time to get it in the hands of some makers for a thorough test.
Sincerely,
Rob
