My girl friend was rummaging through an old dresser that was stored in her basement and the next day surprised me with a few gifts.

A second Sodbuster Jr. (CV)

One 'Bear MGC USA' - Bear and Sons - 3 blade Midsized Stockman

One little "SWArmy" knockoff knife.

Got some cleanup to do but I'm a happy camper.

That’s a neat collection of older knives. They look a little abused so there’s not much intrinsic value, but if you can learn the story behind any of these knives, they may have huge emotional value!

Good luck on your discovery!

Hmm, seeing 2 or 3 dots right beside of the model number besides the single dot to the left ?! Or is that all just a couple of rust spots playing tricks with the photo?

Ahhh! Good eye there.
With my Optivisor on it's 1 dot to the left and 2 dots to the right ... and the other on the right is a rust divot.
The second dot on the right is very slightly higher in position than the first, but turning the blade to the left under my magnified view I can see the rounded impression and that they were punched in, possibly by hand, as they're not 'exactly' level to each other.
So that narrows it down to 1980 - 1981 with macassar ebony scales, and I assume then it will be 420C or 425M?

I'm not sure how to tell if it's 420C or 425M since there seems to be an overlap in times when both were used, so if anyone has an idea of how to figure that out I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thank you!

I'll be keeping them for sure.

Here's what I've picked up from various threads in the Buck subforum:

Pre 1981: 440C
1981-1992: 425M
1992-present: 420HC

Send that Buck in for SPA service. You’ll get it back looking brand new, but it will still have all the cool dings and deeper character marks.

That buck doesn't look too beat up just needs a good cleaning. Buck offers a spa service. U send it in and it comes back looking real good.
