I have recently gotten into traditional knives after being a big tactical folder guy for most of the time I have been interested in knives. While on vacation in Michigan, I stumbled upon this Schrade 285UH at an antiques store. Because I am a sick individual (knife addiction is a disease), I paid $25 for it. It is in pretty rough shape. The blades are heavily scratched and the tip on the clip point blade has been broken off. There is some light corrosion near the base of the blades as well. Additionally, one of the pins holding the scales in place is missing.

I would like to fix this blade up a bit, but I really don't know where to start. Thanks for any imput.

Hmmm. You can restore a semi uniform satin finish with scotchbrite green or some 400 wet/dry sandpaper. Go one direction only. If you are an experienced sharpener or grinder you can probably straighten out that edge some.

That really isn't too rough as they go.

Thanks. I don't think regrinding the tip should be too much of a problem. I have a DMT Extra Course and access to a bench grinder. Which would be the preferred method?

Hi,

Nice find! I love the old Schrades. I would stay away from the bench grinder, the steel will not tolerate that kind of abuse. It should work quite easily with most bench stones or your DMT.

I used 400 grit wet or dry on my UH going perpendicular to the edge, and it came out really nice. I would take the portions of the edge that need to be thinned back a lot to a uniform grit but coarse rock or, in my case, piece of flagstone.

Nice Knife,
Connor

I'd hate to be an ant that thinks it get any sugar out of Fes's sugar bowl.
Pre 2004 to start with.
