Ever since I saw Jeff Halls Big Ugly on the cover of Blade magazine several months back, I have wanted a big custom tactical, no frills. The only thing is, if I were to buy it, I probably would not use it, because of the high cost involved as opposed to a production tactical. I am looking to spend no more than 350 dollars, spear point blade, no serrations, maybe 440, any suggestions on stainless steel? Haven't really thought about handle materials, something better than Zytel. About 3 and a half inches to 5 inches blade length. Lockback. Lanyard hole. I can draw the basic style of what I'm looking for. I can't commission anything right now, appreciate your input.

In the $350.00 range you should take a look at the Model 2 from Mike Obenauf. It has a 3 5/8" blade and carbon fiber scales. The bolster, frame, lock and clip are made from titanium. Blade steel is either D2 or 154CM. Mike might have started using other blade steels as well.

Check out the Exchange, TBG has a nice looking Duncan Whiplash up right now that is in your range. Click Me! I would buy it, only I am pretty starpped at the moment and already have some knives on order. But if someone doesn't snag that piece soon I will need to jump on it.

Also you might want to check out Aaron Frederick. I just got a nice flipper knife from him at ECCKS for a bit over $200. If you want something a bit larger I am sure you could get one and keep it within budget. He does make som fancier pieces, but also has a very nice working line.

As for steel the biggest thing going is S30V, so many makers are using that. Other big steels in custom folders are currently 154CM, D2, and Talonite. That isn't to say that any other steels aren't good, just that I haven't seen them used much.

You could also check out the Makers and Exchange forums for some good deals. It is quit possible to pick up a nice knife at a good price here.
