Just got Laguiole made by Arto with ebony handles. What a beautiful elegant knife.Razor sharp and classy for gentleman's carry. These knives are excellent for cutting food and basically almost any cutting chore, and can be used for defense too.spring is very strong.Any opinions or stories on this knife???all input welcome.

Laguiole knives are classic French design. I’m more partial to the other regional patterns but the Laguiole are the most well known. French cutlery does what it is designed to do, and food prep is the Laguiole’s “bread and butter“ so to speak

Unfortunately, Arto (formerly Arthaud-Chosson) is currently under a liquidation procedure because instead of keeping on making good (they were never unexpensive) traditional knives that sold quite well thanks to the good reputation,, the new owner went into para-tactical with components from Asia. The axe has fallen. So if you meet an Arto traditional pattern, don't forget that when it's gone, it's gone. :(

I think moderators will allow the site, as there's nothing for sale anymore. Just to see where foolish behaviour can lead a formerly sound company.

I know one thing I'd love to see is pictures! I'd be happy to help you post them if you have trouble with that.

Every new knife post is better with pictures. ;)

Jolipapa Jolipapa What a depressing and salutary saga of incompetence and greed. Could happen to any decent company once a short term pirate get's in charge :(:poop:

Its traditional made in France.I've seen tactical knives made by them in Taiwan.traditional ones made in France are of way better quality.

A couple of places where some interesting laguiole knives may be purchased.

Edit: sorry about those links!

The quality on the one I have is excellent.on par with laguiole en aubrac or even better.I don't have fontenille pattaud or forge de laguiole to compare it.

I'd like to have an ARTO knife in D2.

I'd like to have an ARTO knife in D2.
D2 is not much used in France, sometime O2, but as law forbids the use of non stainless for food (and that 's the biggest of knives duties here), most knives are 12C27, though 14C28 seems to be the new trend.

12c27 behaves like carbon but doesn't rust.it's good all around steel, especially for food cutting.I like carbon steel but some knives just rust when in pocket, when I'm in humid environment, guess its sweat.12c27 is good choice for this type of knife.victorinox steel is excellent for this application too, couldn't get it to rust doesn't matter how much I tried.when cutting food it's one of concerns as I spend lot of time in humid tropical places.

12 C 27 is a good trustable steel, which is often used, when it comes to french knives. You can get it scary sharp. But concerning edge retention, there are better ones today, and I´m not talking ´bout PM steels. Contrariwise it´s easy to be sharpened, even with limited tools or outside in the woods. So in my opinion it´s a reasonable steel, but limited in its scope

I wanted to buy another arto, went to the store and guess what.even the ones with ebony scales were of poor finish, worse than Chinese baladeo laguiole LOL.I'm lucky I got the good one,but 2 other ones had poor finish.its a shame that this company went from excellent to poor.

Excellent steel for edc and all around use.easy to sharpen and takes great edge and easy to touch up on ceramics or whatever.
