I just got my 1st Spyderco last night. Its just your average Zytel Endura w/steel clip. But I think its awesome. Any tricks that anyone can tell me about it. Suggestions would be greatly appreiciated.
Yours Truly,
"The Serator"

if you're anything like me, this won't be your last spyderco. i currently have 12 of them and have had 7 others that i had to sell out of need for money. i was sorry to see them go, but others took their place. i don't know of any real "tricks", but i have played with all of mine enough that they all have super smooth actions, and i usually round the edges of the grips a little bit to make them a tad more comfortable. hope you love your purchase as much as i love mine.

Good choice. The Endura is the workhorse of my industy.

I still see an Axis in your future...

Serator, congrats! That's one knife you can truly depend on.

I love my Endura, and it's really a workhorse. I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up getting even more Spydercos in the near future.

You will be buying more Spydies in the future! The hole, the ergonomics and the sharpness of the blade are addictive as you will soon find out.

Some suggestions:
-Calypso jr (plain edge, micarta handle)
-Lightweight Cricket
-Military
-Wegner (large or small)

BUT FIRST OF ALL, GET A SHARPMAKER !!!!

Welcome to the club.

If you haven't already, go to school by reading the Spyderco Forum here. The CEO of the company, Sal Glessar, posts there almost every day. Buy a Starmate or Military, the CPM440V steel gets so sharp its almost like magic, and holds an edge for a looooong time.

I agree with Chief.
Next you have to try the military or Starmate. You will not be sorry.

Serator, welcome to the club! My first Spyderco was a pre-'98 Endura that I got a great price on from Bruce at Bullman Cutlery. After that I quickly got a plain edge full-size Calypso, too. I am now lusting after the Military and the Starmate, but I see a Lum in my future, too. The thing about Spyderco is a lot of their knives are seemingly alike in looks (put the Military, Endura, Calypso next to each other and look at them with an untrianed eye), but when you get them in your hand you really can tell a difference.

Ah, yes, the first Spydie!

I got my first one (original Delica) in Nov. '97. I thought it would be my only one. Hah! I can't really count my Spydercos off the top of my head now. I love 'em all. And I agree with one of the above posts that, although many of the Spydercos look alike to the untrained eye, each has its own feel, purposes, and 'spirit.' Add in the fact of very good consistency of high quality and good customer service, and you'll be back! You have been bitten by the Spyder bug!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, "I really believe that the StarMAte is as close to perfection in a folding knife as I have seen." Getg a StarMate and then save up for a Military.

Glad to see another convert to the Spyderco club. I recieved a Delica back in '96 and still carry it with me every day. Also use a Mariner regularly as an EMT on an ambulance crew. Wish I'd picked up a Civilian when they first came out before the price went up. Next on the list - a Rescue Jr with orange handle for my ambulance work (the Mariner's a great knife, but the metal handle's a little slippery when things get messy).

My first Spydie was a Lady bug I purchased to put on my case keys.I work retail jewelry,so it helps to have a small knife to trim sale tag tails to make the cases look neater. That was in Dec 95, now I have some thing over 60 and still building the collection. My favorite is always the last one bought. The newest is the Shabaria and I gotta tell you this one is really sweet.I've been working it on my Spydie sharpener and now it is so sharp it scares me, and I'm just about fearless when it comes to knives. This is probably some kind of emotional instability or personality disorder or some thing. I think there surely must be worst afflictions than Spydie bites. At least if you have to contract a incurable disease Spydie bite are the most enjoyable.

Enjoy your first Spydie and many more to come I'm sure.

At Christmas I got my first two from Spyderco: Endura and Matriarch. The Matriarch goes in my closet for safe keeping but the Endura hasn't left my side since. I even ordered a plain edge Rookie a few days ago to add to the pile. A few months ago I looked at Spyderco and thought they looked cheaply made. Boy, was I wrong.

Chinook, I think that "arachnophilia" is the word that you are seeking, but then I may be stumbling into another hoplophobe morass.

Serator, my first Spydie was my ss Police, and my second was my C15 Terzuola Clipit, so that Enduras and Delicas were a come-down for me, but they are still the best bang for the buck today. Were I you, I would start saving toward a StarMate. It is, in my opinion, as close to perfection as I have seen in a folder, custom, bench made, or manufactured, and that includes the highly vaunted Sebenza (INCOMING!!). I may, one day, buy a Sebenza, as it is one very fine knife, but the StarMate fits me better, is easier to use, and about one third the price for a knife that is about 95% as well made and has better steel in the blade. BTW, I also feel that Porsche automobiles are very overrated, as Donnie Allison once commented in a Car & Driver test,"A triumph of developement over design."

You'll like it even better after you have it for awhile. The quality of spydercos are unbeleivable for the price.
My tip is that when you need to sharpen it (is it plain, combo or spyder edge?)That on any plain sections, you finish with the finest stone you have and then only strop it a little if any at all. ATS55 dosn't do well on the honing strop becasue it leads to edge rolling fast.
For serrations, I have a diamond rod that I use first. ( 600grit) Then I go to a hard arkansas gouge slip and polish them some more. This usually puts a wire edge ( burr) on the smooth side of the bevel. To take that off, I put the smooth bevel flat on the honing strop and polish it off. That gets the serrations beyond scary sharp.
I use micro fine honing compound to charge the strop. Its grit size is .5 microns. I think its the equivalenyt of green jewelers rouge if you can't find the micro fine stuff.
Enjoy the endura its a great knife.

OED2 has it like this:

-mania ....in the sense of a ‘craze’ or passion (e.g. for some pursuit, or the collection of some class of objects)

-philia ...friendship, fondness, undue inclination towards

I'm afraid my affliction is of the former definition.

Butt I agree that the Starmate is the 'best' big knife in the Spyderco line (right now)

Chinook, you're likely right. My feelings toward most Spydies are in the -philia class, I have come to love them after getting to know them. I don't think that I am manic about them. (My name is Hugh and I am a Spyderholic.) I do love that StarMate, though. It's just a damned shame that the bloody DC govt. won't let me carry it where I work!

Serator-

Glad to hear it, I hope you enjoy it for a long time. I, too have just really started to get into Spydercos- they really are very well made and the product line is diverse to say the least. I've been working on obtaining the "custom collaboration" models.
So far I've got: Herbst, Shabaria, Lg. Tim Wegner, Lg. and Jr. Wayne Goddards, and a Starmate on the way. If I had to recommend one thus far- get a Goddard Jr.! Great size, good steel, excellent ergos- a perfect day to day task knife for me. A lot like the Calypso Jr..

All these guys are right- you can't just stop at one!

Ah yes- now it begins- the search for the next Spyderco. There are as many opinions as members as to which is the "best". I can personally vouch for the Wegner. Spent over a year in my pocket. Love my knife. I'm afraid to even hold a Starmate for fear that I'd feel compelled to immediately buy another knife!
