I just had an idea for a new knife design.

Danny,

It depends on uniqueness of it.
Different strokes for different folks.
You could file patent for different grinds, materials, heat treat or something made out of Unobtainium.:)

I have a few designs in head. So does Hung and Cotherion.
Our intent is to be able to help HI has variety but keeping khuks at its core.
Hybrid ,anyone?

I would let Auntie decide on the designs. It's indeed a good feel for killa_concept when his idea of farm knife prospered into a staple of HI today.

It would be difficult to create a knife design that someone somewhere hasn't already created. I have never seen a blade design patented. I bet it'd be pretty difficult to patent unless it had a unique mechanical function to it. Now, maybe a blade with a new type of serration to it or something like that.

Oh this isn't an HI product idea (I've done my share of those!)

Danny, thanks for your bright idea.
Otherwise we won't be able to own Teardrop Sirupati!;)

It can be a pain in the butt to go through the patent process. You can however

trademark your design through copywrighting it. I did this with my

grip designs for foil,epee,and sabre.

I was a little sad to see a knife (Shakaulu) at SHOT that was about 93% similar to one I designed with Eric Draven about 2 months ago But truly new blade shapes are rare.

Mechanics, on the other hand...Danny, you might consider getting a company like Kershaw to sign a non-disclosure form, and showing your design to them. :)
