I was ordering 3 Benchmade 42MCs from newgraham, so I figured what the hell, I'l get a Calypso Jr too, just to see why you nutjobs cream over it so much.
I figured I could sell it easily enough to one of you guys if I didn't like it.
The thing is, I really don't have a need or use for this knife. Not now anyway. I sort of bought it in case I ever have to leave Arizona. See, of all my $7000+ collection of knives, I own only one dedicated main folding knife (not counting SAKs or Leathermen) that isn't either an auto or balisong. Before the Calypso Jr, I didn't have any. There's the Kershaw Rainbow Leek, but being an assisted "semi-auto", I'm not sure I'd trust flying with it to states where I'm unfamiliar with the laws. I do a have a few other Spyderco folders, but these are all fully serrated secondary folders.
So now I have the Calypso Jr, a plain edge primary cary folder that's legal carry just about anywhere in the USA.
And, all you whackos are right. It's a great little knife. Not perfect, but good for the money. The grinds on the spine aren't exactly symetrical, and the blade does not center when closed. But it's smooth, light, comfy, and of course, wicked sharp.
I probably won't carry it much, except perhaps as a dress knife, if for some reason I feel like a BM31 balisong would be badly out of place.
I have to agree with those of you who want a high-end version of the Calypso Jr, like a cross between this knife and the UK Penknife. The upcomming burgandy ZDP-189 Calypso Jr looks like a good alternative. I might have to pick one of those up too.
