I was shocked to hear about the passing on of James. He will be greatly missed here in the Spyderco Forum. I always enjoyed looking at the "wallpaper" that he posted here. My condolences go out to his friends and family. Although I only talked with him a couple of times, I feel very sad like I have lost a best friend. I don't know what else to say.

Rest in peace James.

I am so so so sorry! I talked to him less than two weeks ago. We talked on the phone like we were good buddies! Hope he did not suffer and that he is at a better place!
My sincere thoughts go out to his family

I spoke to him by e-mail less than a month ago. He seemed like a decent person with his charitable donations, and I always enjoyed the pictures he posted in these forums.

May he rest well, I wish I had gotten to know him better.

It is like losing a family member!

I read Mr Mattis' messages in many forums here. He illuminated, illustrated and educated; never overbearing or intimidating , butt rather caring and sharing with his knowledge.
I particularly enjoyed his characterizing of the newest, wickedest looking edged weapons as "bagel slicers" or "boiled egg cross-section separators" I felt he was doing what he really enjoyed... interacting with people in a knife oriented environment always adding his view of functional humanism to temper the hard cold steel.
A truly knowledgeable and helpful guide. He will be missed.

James was an integral part of the Spyderco forum. He will be greatly missed here.

James was a special person for all of us. Condolences to his family, friends and fellow forumites.

Peace be with you.

It is with great sadness that I read of James Mattis' demise. James was a great asset to this community and to the world generally. May he rest in peace.

I've been gone a few days and i just came back to this. Hard to see the screen at this moment...

God speed James and may the wind always fill your sails.

I was working with James on a purchase, and I must say that based on his willingness to go out of his way for a strager, we have lost a good man. My best to his family.

We just talked with James at Blade Show West.
Then I read this today and am totally shocked and sorrowfull.

Our condolences, prayers and empathy for James' family.

James' involvment and knowledge was always positive, welcomed and refreshing. We will miss James - he was a fine gentleman.

I was wery out of balance when I wrote my answer to the main thread that announced his passing.

Ever since I have wondered what could I do to keep his wisdom still present here. I have not come to any good conclusion.

But I decided to honor his memory by using signature. It has some of his joy of life... as only he could say. I can't say what I would like to in english

I hope it is visible now

I just heard about James passing and am saddened by the news. I just met James at the Blade show the beginning of this year. He was kind enough to give me a demonstration of how he performed his excellent scans. He was very giving of his knowledge and will be sorely missed. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
Aloha James.
