When everyone else in the house goes to bed I get on the puter and check out the blade forums or other knife sites, when my wife asked why, I said I've got the only wife I'm ever going to have, but I don't have all the knives I'm ever going to have. She still loves me, thank god.

Knives can become an obsession, relegating the entire rest of life(and wife) to palely loitering in the wings. i have done little else but 'knife' for over 2 years.

The real challenge is getting the wife to understand why you have to own more than one, and THEN getting them to understand why you have to spend more that $100 on one.

Saving for, buying and using the knives is the easy part.

I will usually try to make the point that as far as collections go, one could do a lot worse then knives.

You can get rid of a wife, but an ex-wife is forever.

Knives you can just put on ebay...

A profound statement!

It causes me to think what affect my own obsessions with material objects has had since two divorces?

If he breaks out in song I am out of here.

My ploy is to 'obtain' a discontinued variety of knife every once in a while.

Then when questions come up I can truthfully say, "It's a kind of investment; they don't make these anymore, so someday they'll be worth some $$$."

This has been actually true in a number of cases...that Hubertus auto that I paid $75 for, back in the day, is now going for ~$125, and the Blackjack folder that I got for $25 at a gun show is now valued at maybe $100...to the right 'collector'!

Keep on 'investing'... :)

There is a song I'd like to sing now...Oh, nevermind...

Yeah my broker was telling me the stock market is too risky right now.

He says collectables rarely produce a reliable profit as an investment. Usually our posessions are sold for cents on the dollar by uninformed relatives at our passing : (

But buying low and quick resale can turn amazing profits if you're consistent and wise.

That's why I've documented the collection with ID pics and values-to-date...so my wife, etc will have an informed jump-start if she ever needs to sell some after I 'demise'... :)

I've made much more $$ buying and selling antique guns than in the stock market, and had much more fun, too.

I am sure one could do the same with knives except I can never seem to sell any of mine... ;)
