Well im a 18 year old male so I have always loved knives and firearms. As of now I only have one knife but, hopefully that will change soon. :)

After reading a post here about making knives I decided to take the leap and attempt to make my first knife. Keep in mind that I NEVER attempted anything like this before IN MY LIFE. This is my FIRST attempt at making a knife. I dont even have a sharpening stone. So go easy on me. :D

All the tools I had to make this knife was a hammer, a hack saw and some files.

After looking around the garage for some steel, I decided this was my best bet. Nothing else was even close to a slab or bar of steel.

After hammering the cuff as straight as I could, I cut the end off of one end. Since this was my first knife I decided to keep the blade design as simple as I possibly could. After cutting the blade out I began sharpening it. Since I dont have a sharpening stone of any kind all I could use was files. I was able to get it surprisingly sharp!

Well...there she is. My hands are pretty sore....but making it was defiantly alot of fun. I think its going to become an addiction.

Congrats on your first knife. Make sure and save it. Since you said you were 18 I'm guessing you don't have a big shop or a lot of tools you might want to go to Jerry Hossum's web site (google it) and look for the jonesy knifemaking tutorial. Have fun...

Right on! Welcome to the addiction. I like the blade profile and like tmickley said, make sure you keep it so in a few years you can look back on it and see all the progress you made.

I still have my first one sitting on my entertainment center and look at it often. I would post a pic of it but I don't want to hijack your thread.

Again, congrats and welcome to the forums.

Sound like a good idea for a special thread...everyone's firsts, or early works in your knifemaking. Frank

Much better than my first. I sharpened a butter knife and tied twine around the handle. Still have it somewhere.

I like the blade profile

Well thanks! Since it was my first attempt I decided to keep it very simple. I know compared to some of the knives yall make, this one looks like absolute crap...but ive got to start somewhere, and at least I learned alot while making it.

Next im going to attempt to make a bowie style blade. :D Ill post an update as soon as I finish it.

i agree that we should have a contest for who made the worst first knife.
you would not win HKG36 that is a great first knife.
some people have been posting "first knives" that look better than my knifes now :D that looks like it would make a good throwing knife.

Hey,I made one like that when I was in the joint (just kidding). Many of us made our first knife with no training or knowledge, from any piece of metal available..Read up on knifemaking, learn about steel, find a smith to be a mentor, and practice a lot.Get some 1070 or 5160 for your next knife. It will work about the same as that galvanized mild steel you used, but it will make a good knife after HT.It doesn''t take a lot of tools to make a simple knife.Read Wayne Goddard's,"The $50 knife shop".Keep at it.

Where do you live? Find a knifemaker close by and go visit. Greatly reduce the learning curve. Good first effort, now you can start concentrating on the science and physics involved.

I agree with Bruce, To be able to take that post clamp and create a knife is something to be proud of. Thats a super job youve done.

Bruce agreed
You will never look at pointy shapes around you the same way again:D
Inspiration comes at the least expected times and is best left to the subconscious (sp) mind
If you concentrate too hard it never comes...

Thanks for the nice words!

Heres my second knife I finished this morning.

It too started off like this.
