The 31" is discontinued, and i always wanted a baton... but i have no clue what i'm doing. anything i should know before i break my tv and my coffee table?

Standard lengths vs. ideal lengths.

Personally, I think 31" is a bit too long. Depending on your height and reach, it would've been better if you tried to determine which length was best suited for you beforehand.

Speaking from an FMA background, there is such a thing as "arm to stick ratio" or "torso to stick ratio" as these were since olden times the anthropological markers for measuring user lengths with sticks (e.g. - the length spanning armpit to tip of index finger, the length of belly button to between the eyes).

Nono, we've miscommunicated. I ordered the 31" because it was no longer in production. They still had some remaining, and will be on the way soon. Just wanted to get one before I can no longer get it.

I'm pretty short, 5'7. Now that i think about it, I'd probably be dragging it on the floor...

I see. Well then I suppose it's a matter of being in synch with it then.

okay so i lied, i'm more 5'6 but i round up.

good thing i asked, i got the holster with it, and i was about to order a leverage endcap... but if i dont need it id rather have a glassbreaker...

i'll let you guys know how it feels when i get it and post some pics.

Do you need it for work or is it legal for a civilian to carry in your area?

Well, there's a "glass breaker" on the end of it;)
I have the 26", haven't seen the 31". Don't let your friends play with it indoors, or try to open it out the window of a car(good thing it was his truck that got smacked in the door, or he'd have gotten a 26" "expandable" enema).

I like batons for self defense---they've always appealed to me. They are much easier to apply as an impact weapon rather than something like Kelly Worden's Travel Wrench (with less training) and are very versatile against a host of opponents armed with edged weapons and etc. As long as it's legal, it can be a viable part of any carry plan.

That being said, I do think that 31 inches is a little long---while it would give you reach, it would probably be slower than its shorter counterparts and a bit unwieldy.

thanks infidelshootist! so far i've only read the Riot Baton one as it was the only one that didn't look 50 years old., and clear pictures and to the point. i'll probably read the other ones as i go on.

i found this just the other day in the filipino forum and it was really educational.

i have a 24" Snap on breaker bar in my trunk as my primary defense uh... against flat tires. some guys like to keep a tire thumper in their trunk... but thats just stupid.

Old is good for unarmed defense especially with canes/sticks.
Think about it.
Pre fire-arms, 911 and lawsuits people depended on these tools.
They used them for real all the time.
Most so called instructors these days are "Kata Dancers" or "Baton Twirlers"
They've never been in a fight and wouldn't know what to do if it came down to it.

I got it yesterday, its a REALLY heavy duty piece. Very sturdy, i dont think i can ever break it, but if i do its warrentied for breaking and bending. The rubber grip is okay, i think it would be better if it was thicker. I have to work on my flick to get it to open tight every time. retracting it is nearly impossible unless you hit it against concrete or metal, doesn't work on wood floors. I use my 20lb dumbbell. Theres already scratches on mine from opening and closing, but it's no big deal.

31" is really nice. I don't think something shorter would have satisfied me. It's really good reach and I don't drag it. Weight and balance is all preference, but if you train with it you would get used to it.

In all, it's very nice and definitely works as supposed to, but I spent, I think $110 for the baton and sidebreak holster, I don't think that's really worth it unless it was used professionally. Something cheaper would have been fine for someone like me, but I didnt really buy it to use.

Is it something you could carry in a back-pocket or IWB "In waist-band"?
What's the weight?
I've never seen a 31inch ASP in person.

I've got a shorter ASP, don't know the length, but the way I prefer to carry it is in my boot.

its a bit too big for the back pocket. waistband should be okay if you get it to stay. the sidebreak holster i have is fully rotation, but i haven't looped it around my belt yet. ill give it a shot later. it's 11" closed. it feels about 2 to 3 lb, exact is actually 24oz.

ill take some pictures with some of my knives later on.
