I just ordered a Dark Ops knife - bad idea?

I just ordered a Stratofighter Stiletto for $200 shipped. I've read the couple reviews online about the company. It seems that their early ~2005 models were badly made, but that their newer models seem to have improved in the QC department. Is that true? Did I just buy a piece of crap?

Dark Ops are a joke around here because of their way-over-the-top marketing, styling, and because their designs were ripped off from Extrema Ratio.

As for the actual knives, I really don't know. Some reports are that they're solid as bricks, others have serious QC issues. Self-promoted hype aside, they're intended as hard use knives for "tactical" situations. Whatever the hell that means. What do you want the knife for? If it's for covertly deanimating cardboard boxes or whittling, it's way too much of a knife. The blade is definitely not designed for slicing, or anything utility, really. And they make no illusions otherwise. The knife was designed to stab people again and again. Their knives are marketed towards "operators", which means the vast majority of the people who buy their knives are the mall ninja/armchair commando type.

If I were you, I'd see about canceling the order, or returning it if it's too late. If you just want a big, tough knife (for the same price or less), look into a Spyderco Manix or Benchmade Rukus, and Kershaw's Zero Tolerance line. If you want to spend more, look at Striders.

+1 to a ZT

Dork oops and mystery steel:thumbdn:

Well, lets wait and you will tell us about it once it will be delivered to you?

Thanks, Vassili.

yeah, actually i wouldn't doubt that dark ops knives are pretty well made.

edit: but obviously there are better choices. and their marketing is just stupid

In that case the proverb "It's better later than never", does not quite work. Can you cancel the order?:D $200 shipped is a good find thought.

"The Blade steel is made from Dark Ops proprietary CTV2™ steel, an exotic and expensive Hybrid of Chromium, Cobalt, Tungsten, Vanadium, Molybdenum, in an alloy of surgical grade stainless steel."

At least it's surgical grade...;)

surgical? wolverine's bones are fused with "surgical steel." it must be good!

oh yeah, and tell us if the blood grooves really do direct the blood spray into your opponents eyes. if it does work, i might just have to get one myself

aw, no blood groves...
In all seriousness though, I don't think you bought garbage, despite what people say about dark ops. Most of all the dark ops bashing here is aimed at their over the top designs and marketing. I think very few people have actually been able to handle one and see how it performs.

please do tell us how it is after you get it, and if you like it, enjoy it.
