hi i just joined this site! i also just ordered the Spyderco D'allara! if anyone has this knife or a similar knife please tell me how you like it aswell as what is good about the knife and what is bad!

Thanks

Welcome to the forums, JC!

The D'Allara is a well made, tough knife with one of the strongest locks made. The steel (VG10) is great and the ergonomics are terrific.

The only downside I found with the D'Allara, is that due to it's thickness, it occupies a lot of pocket space. Regardless of that, I am sure that you will enjoy it.

Yet again, the infamous post purchase review request. I'm not ragging on you Johnnycakes, its just a common practice around here, and I don't really understand it. Do you really want to hear the truth about the knife? or do you want us to exalt it? I can do neither as I've never owned a D'allara, but if it's anything like every spyderco I've ever had then you will love it.

It's a great knife. One of my favorites (in fact, I own two!). If you want a solid, heavy duty, reliable folder that isn't huge, you really can't beat the D'Allara. The blade shape is awesome, the lock system is rock solid, and it just feels beefy. It's a lot more knife than it should be for it's size. For a knife with a 3.5" blade, once it's in your hand, it feels like a knife with a 6" blade. It's also one of the most comfortable knives to hold that I've found. You could work with it for hours, and not find mind. That's unlike a lot of other knives that I really like, and even carry regularly, but tend to get uncomfortable if you have to use them for extended periods of time.

The one and only downside is the weight. When you've got a knife this solid, it's going to be a little heavier than some comparable folders. For example, my normal Every Day Carry (EDC) knife is a Spyerco Salt 1 (which, if you look at the blade shape, is rather a lot like a smaller, lighter weight, rust-proof variation on a D'Allara) weighs 2 ounces. The D'Allara weighs in at 5.1 ounces.

Congrats on a great purchase. ;-)

thank you! this is great info!

I agree with the other folks: an outstanding knife. The ergos of the handle are very nice.

It is a great, tough EDC. To me, it's comparable BM Grip. I used my D'Allara happily, though I did have a problems with the ball bearing lock when using gloves.

The D'Allara is a great hard-use EDC. While it's thick in the pocket, the handle and is comfortable and ergonomic, the drop-point VG10 blade holds an edge, resists rust, and is very useful from chores from slicing cardboard to dressing anything from a rabbit to a whitetail, and the ball-bearing lock is very sturdy. You couldn't ask much more out of a knife, especially for such a good price.

To paraphrase Hateman, it's Spyderco's answer to the Benchmade Griptilian.

The D'Allara is an outstanding knife, I am sure it will not disappoint. Yeah it's big and takes up a lot of pocket space, but those big 3D handles are very comfortable/secure in hand and the ball lock is smooth and rock solid. The wire clip is excellent also.

(As he withdraws said knife from pouch on belt): I agree with the above re ergos, lock, blade. I carry mine in a pouch, but it's OK in comfort-fit pants (vs. skin-tight 501's). Wire clip has no edges to feel in your hand.

Great knife, I don't think it's all that terrible to carry in your pocket, not like those buck striders that you can't get your hand past to get your keys.

Aren't these discontinued? Too bad if that is the case.

I had one but was not really that thrilled with it. Found it to be too large/thick for comfortable front pocket carry. The ball bearing locking system is very strong but when wet found it difficult to desengage. Just my $0.02.
