I just realized I have carried a leatherman squirt on the past 4 flights I have taken

I added a squirt PS4 to my keychain about 6 months ago and never once did it occur to me to take it off my keyring to fly until just now. How the heck did TSA not see it? I have just removed it, and will only have an Atwood Prybaby on there from now on so I don't get it confiscated and/or get in trouble.

Anyone else accidentally carried something like this on a plane?

It probably just blended in with your keys, you'd be amazed at some of the things that go through airport security. I know people who have accidentally carried their keys 4-5 keys and a religious metal about the size of a dime on a metal dogtag necklace through the metal detector and not had it go off. The old lady has gone through with a 3-4 inch POS blade forgotten in the bottom of her purse before. My mother went through airport security before with a gigantic screw about 8.5-9inches long that would have made a wonderful shank and actually showed it to the tsa after going through when she realized it was in her purse, they thought nothing of it.

We flew out to Las Vegas to hike Havasu Falls last summer, and my sister caused quite a commotion because she had some face cream in her purse that was not in a clear container. They pulled her into a plexiglass room and padded her down. They chemically tested the face cream in a big beeping machine that said it wasn't a bomb or a gun. After about 5 minutes of questions and stern looks, they let her go.

When she walking away and putting the cream back in her purse, she noticed her bright pink mace spray was sitting right on top of the contents of her purse!

Why does your mother carry a 9 inch screw in her purse?

While flying to Arizona a few years ago, I got through with a little SAK attached to my keys, not a big deal, but similar to the previous stories mentioned.

I lost my Squirt when I forgot to take it off my keychain at the airport. I had a plane to catch so I chose to surrender mine.

TSA quality of screeners is really sketchy, airports will also vary greatly in levels of motivation & training.

I have had a Spyderco Bug on my Keychain a couple of times with no issues, but I stopped bringing it along, I don't want to lose it, not like they should care much about such a small knife

If that had been me, they would have caught it, no question. I get searched multiple times every time I go to the airport, sometimes even if I'm just there in my own car picking up a friend, and never get out of my vehicle. They claim not to profile, but being an Asian, and getting searched as consistently as I do, I know the truth of that. Of course, I think that's mainly just my airport, since I went through the airport in New Orleans without any trouble. But last time I had a pocket knife in my luggage, they actually held me for questioning. I didn't even know it was illegal to have a pocket knife in your checked luggage these days!

Do you have a police record? I'd say that would be more of a red flag than because you are Asian. Also, if you were held for questioning at an airport, doesn't matter if it was all BS, congratulations, you are probably on TSA's watch list.

A few years ago I flew to and from Kansas City to Montreal with a Kershaw Chive in my camera bag. Got pulled to the side and hand check in Montreal on the way back. Screener said they saw a knife in my bag. First thing she did was take out my small camera bag and told me to hold it. Then she dumped everything out of my bag and went though my dirty clothes. Then she put the empty bag back though the x ray machine. She told me it must have been the thin metal clip on my cell phone case.

She told me I was free to go, never even looking in my camera bag.:eek:

At least they caught something on the way back, even if they didn't find it. On my way to Montreal I had sailed right though.

When I got home I dumped the camera bag out and still didn't see anything. Opened the side pocket and pulled out the spare battery and memory cards, and out dropped the Chive.

On a side note 20 years ago I was getting on a plane with my boss. He got stopped for having a Mickey Mouse butter knife in his brief case. They told him all fixed knives couldn't be carried on. But any folding knife with a blade under 4" was fine.

Those were the days. :)

Schrade LB7 was always in my carry on no problems.

When she told me the story she said she had picked it up in a parking lot a couple of days before because she was worried it would get somebodies tire and had subsequently forgotten about it.

I do like the NiN theory better though :)

The TSA is a bad joke that is slowly eroding our freedoms, and they are in not designed to be effective in catching bad guys, only to get the general public used to giving up their constitutional rights. And this isn't a political post, Bush started it, Obama is continuing it.

On the last business flight before I retired (pre-9/11) I went through the usual security check and baggage X-ray at the Birmingham Airport. Upon unpacking at the hotel, I discovered to my horror that I had not done an adequate job of emptying my Filson bag which I had carried on. I had also used it on my last shooting outing, and inside was a J-frame size speedloader with five rounds of .38 special, and an MTM AMMO-Pack filled with 9mm +P. To make matters worse I was in California! I brought them back home inside my second pair of shoes, packed in my checked luggage, without incident.

I am sure it would not turn out that well today, but someone was obviously just going thru the motions at the X-ray display.

Flying out of Hartford recently with my 20 yr old daughter when TSA jacked her up and confiscated her SHAMPOO because it was more than 3.5 oz. Gave her a hard time and talked s*%t to me because I was standing too close and backing her up during the hassling. They then ran her bag through x-ray again. When we got to the gate she pulled a #7 Opinel out of her back pack!--WTF! She'd forgotten it was in there until they pulled her out of line.--TSA-:thumbdn:--KV

My pre-9/11 debacle was handcuffs at the Redding, CA airport going back to Calgary through SFR. No problems CLG to LAX to Redding but oh no, no handcuffs going out in the cabin at Redding. Nevermind the federal law enforcement credentials on top of them. Needed to make the flight so into the luggage they went. They did make it to CLG with me though.

RE the police record bit: Not as far as I know. I've never been arrested, only thing on my record is a few minor speeding tickets. The guy who took me in for questioning did call me an "Ay-rab" though. Seriously. I thought he was joking, and laughed, and that's about when he decided I needed to be questioned. Evidently laughing because someone called a person clearly of Asian lineage an "Ay-rab" constitutes terrorist behavior. I mean, I could understand being called North Korean, which is, to my mind, a legitimate reason for all the searches. I have no problem with profiling. It makes sense to me to check people who are more likely to be terrorists, and lets face it, a blonde with blue eyes is currently probably less of a threat than someone who might be North Korean, or Al Qaeda or something. I'm absolutely fine being searched more often so that we can all be safer. I just wish they'd be straight up about it, and not claim to not be profiling. I will grant you, they let me go pretty quickly when he got me in and I explained what happened, but I would be shocked to hear there was anything on my record warranting being on the watch list.

I do wish they weren't as worried about pocket knives as they are. Seems to me that if law-abiding citizens are allowed to carry their EDC's, it would be harder to take over a plane with a box cutter.
