I just sent an email to Cold Steel

... suggesting they make a Spontoon Tomahawk.

It's just too good

I hope they listen!!!!

As I mentioned in the email, I'm surprised they didn't make one years ago.

And if they did, they be the only source for affordable, useable, production Spontoon tomahawks. Right now the only options we have are crap from India, or pricey custom pieces one would loathe to use because of the expense.

What I suggested was :

- faux pipe bowl style hammer poll like the current CS Pipe Hawk

- double edged dagger-like blade about 5" - 6" long and about 2.5" - 3" wide with curved lugs at the base of the blade.

I'm good for at least two if they don't bugger it up.

I am sure cold steel can get their overseas slave labor force to make just about anything you want.....I think their hawk heads ain't so great and don't hold an edge for &*it.

I haven't had any problems with CS's hawk heads regarding strength and edge.

I'm just happy they aren't as horribly warped as they used to be. For about a ten year period, they looked like their QC guys were on LSD.

then consider yourself lucky. they are pretty much junk. people love to tart them up but you know the sayings......silk purse on a.....?

CS's 1055 steel will not hold an edge as well as better steel, that's just a fact.

However, they also don't chip out or flat-out break like some other steels are prone to.

I would think the better option would be to make them from the same 5150 spring steel as their war hammers, or even 5160. You get much better edge holding and shock resistance, and the spring steels are still cheap.

But in all reality, if I was going out to survive (or test my self in case of having to survive), I'd rather have a softer hawk and just carry a file with me.

Best thing about CS hawks is that they are good enough to work, cheap enough to see if you like hawks, and practice modding. Later, a person can move on to a custom piece made better with better steel, and do the handle mods and such to have exactly what they want. Figuring out what really works for you and what you really want with custom pieces gets real expensive real quick.

I ordered a Pipe Hawk from SMKW and the blade was severely warped. I returned it with specific instructions to replace it so they didnt just grab a random one off the shelf and ship it back. The one I recieved back was better, but it still had a slight twist in it.
