I hope everyone had a great weekend. To the the question I have the diamond lansky sharpening system love it but I need to find something that is quick and easy to just touch up my edge. The edge is a little to damage to just strop but not damaged enough to break out the diamond stones. Thanks for the help!

You can get one of the lansky ceramic stones and use it freehand, and when you do break out the diamonds, you can finish up with it like normal after the diamonds.

Spyderco Sharpmaker all along. Best sharpkeeper/touch up device available (right after HeavyHanded's Washboard though!).

I bought a little ceramic rod that does wonderful for light touch ups. Got mine from Ben's Backwoods.

For really light touch ups, I just use a strop loaded with green compound. If the micro bevel needs to be reset then I break out the sharpmaker and use the medium, fine and ultra-fine stones finishing with some time on the strop.... and if the knife needs a full on bevel reset, then I break out the EdgePro and go to town.

What blade steel(s) will you be touching up? Depending on the answer to that, the solution could range from relatively simple to very, very simple (& dirt cheap).

The Sharpmaker will do fine, or even great, for most knives. For simpler carbon and low-alloy stainless steels (1095, CV, 420HC, 440A/C, etc.), there are many, many options.

Stick a slotted paper wheel onto a bench grinder or buffer:thumbup:.

Or the Worksharp field sharpener. Just stick the sucka in your pocket and you can do anything from edge repair on the diamonds, touch ups on the ceramics, or stropping on the leather.

Thank you guys for the advice question though can the sharpmaker take care of s30v, s35vn, elmax or s90v?

Yes, any of them. The only disadvantage really is if the edge angle is anywhere > 20 dps, you need to reprofile and the Sharpmaker is not made to do this, not even with the additional diamond rods you can get.

For touching up edges in already pretty-good condition, it should handle these steels. Just make sure you don't fall behind on touch-ups, as those steels will take a lot more 'grunt work' to establish new bevels, if they get really dull. The Sharpmaker would be a tough road on which to accomplish that; diamond hones would do much better; especially diamond of larger surface area (bench hones).

For touch-ups on those steels, the optional diamond rods for the Sharpmaker would likely be very useful as well. Not necessarily mandatory for maintenance, but those steels would likely benefit from using the diamond rods.

I've had excellent results with the Lansky Crock Sticks.

First of all, I am a sharpening noob and I have a couple of knives that need to be sharper than they are. I dont use mine daily so none get a big workout but I picked up a couple that need to be sharper.

I am just thinking about touching up my Salt 1 (H1 steel) and a couple of sak's on the Lansky 4 rod Croc Stick setup and wonder if I need to use the medium set or can I just use the fine ones for touching up. The knives are not completely dull but just not as sharp as I would like them.

I am figuring on using the 20 degree angle for the knives too!

So I opened up the Lansky 4 rod and put the fine rods into the 20 deg setting and I cannot believe how much play there is in each hole. I literally have to hold the croc stick in place so it doesnt move around while trying to sharpen.

Is this normal for this cheap system? Did I waste $22?

The ceramic stones will take care of any steel. I can easily touch up s110v on the ceramic stones, dont know where the idea that you cant sharpen high wear steels on ceramic came from???

This with the extra fine stones.

Sharp maker with extra fine stones is amazing, I have the wicked edge also and that is great for reprofiling, but for quick touch ups I go to the sharp maker, and the price is great

For touch up I use a 9" oval ceramic rod. A few light passes and I'm back to shaving sharp.
If a blade doesn't respond to that its off to the belt sander.

I picked up the Sharpmaker today from my local brick and mortar shop they did not have the UF stones they said they can order it for me do they make that much of diffrence or can I just strop with white compound first then go to green compound after I get done using just the fine stones?

Thanks again

Roy

I would try it first, I get a awesome utility edge with the fine stone. My edge is dependent on how straight and steady I keep my hand. If your not happy with the strops you can always order ultra fine ceramics. There is a break in period with the stones as well.
