I just went digital, sort of.

My D100 arrived the other day and after all this time of being digitally challenged, I now own a digital camera. Although biting the bullet on the price tag was a pill to swallow, especially after investing so much in film cameras over the years, but that was the easy part ... now I have to figure out how to use the darned thing.

After going through the manuals (OK, the "quick start guide") I finally figured out how to use the camera in what I call PHD mode, (Push Here Dummy).

Being the computer illiterate that I am, I had to endure the jesting of the children as they watched me download (upload?) pics from the camera to the notebook. I though I was re-enacting the first lunar landing, (if that occurred).

Anybody want to let me email them a pic to post for me so that I can always remember you as the person who helped me post my very first pic on the internet?

Well, here is what Nimrod sent me. If he took this with his new camera I'm mad because he didn't invite me along :D:D
BTW it was a "little" large when I received it ;):D:D

That's a fairly nice picture, Nimrod. You made a good exposure choice.

I made the digital transition, myself, in November. (I bought a canon 1Ds.) I wish I could tell you how easy it is. But I can't. If you're shooting in your camera's raw format, converting your files, photo-editing, preparing them for print--Well, let me just say that I still feel completely lost after four months. But I can say that I am making some progress, and that my handling of the digital end is getting better.

Nimrod, I don't want to hijack your thread, but now that I have your attention:

You're the moderator for the Bussecombat.com forum, right? My account there has stopped working. I need help with it. Please contact me at:

Thanks.

Eric, Thanks bud. I do not know how to change the quality of the image once its been shot, let alone once it has been transferred to the computer. If you have any suggestions, let me know. The location was the bayside of the Upper Keys at a friend's house near mine. It was one of the first twenty or so exposures with the D100. We were just beering, BBQ-ing and BS-ing when I thought it would be cool to capture the setting sun as I usually only get to see it rise over water.

Evolute, If I am not mistaken, my son actually takes the honors here. Naturally, he had a good teacher ;) I had shot a few moments earlier and told him to meter off the part of the water that looks 18% grey, underexpose by a stop or so and crop as he saw fit. Darned kid can out-pack me, out-hike me and looks like he is going to outshoot me (only with cameras!!!) before long.

As for the access to the Busse Combat Forum, yes I am one on in the same with the mighty Nimrod of Moderator fame but, you have to email the Webmaster over there to get account situations resolved. That's even what I have to do from time to time. I'm only the assistant cafeteria monitor.

Congrats Nimrod! You've got yourself a wonderful camera. I don't own one but I hear a lot of great things about the D100. Nice picture too! If you haven't already, check out photo.net, photosig.com and dpreview.com for tips and info about lots of digital camera related stuff.

Congrats again, and good luck with it!

Evolute, you don't mess around when you try a new format! The 1ds is one camera I'd love to try out. Owning would be beter but I'm 22, in school and well...it ain't happing anytime soon :) Digital is great, and I'm sure the more you practice the less "lost" you'll feel. I actually started with digital (Nikon CP 4500) and got a film camera (Nikon N80) for a class I'm going to be taking over the summer. I feel like before I go really far into digital ( I haven't yet, only 5 months) I'd start learning traditional film photography, and how to develop, etc..

Nice pix Nimrod!

Evolute, don't feel bad, at least you're making progress. The Geek world is a little strange sometimes. After spending 2 1/2 years of taking graphic design classes, I kind of understand the processes that goes on.

I got the Canon 10D recently. I need to take a pill to remember what all the buttons do. What happened to the plain old manual cameras?

Nice shot Nimmy

Thought that view looked a little familiar. My dad has a place in Key Largo oceanside, but several resturants we go to are on the bay side and so get to enjoy the sunsets. Beautiful during the week, but a madhouse on the weekends. You live down this way or just visiting? I'm up near Ft. Lauderdale myself.

Nimrod,

Keep encouraging your son; he's not talentless at photography.

In addition to AVP's suggestions, I also suggest www.steves-digicams.com

www.luminous-landscape.com

www.imaging-resource.com

www.fredmiranda.com and

Oh, and while you're at photo.net, don't forget to read my regular column.

I'll be in touch with the bussecombat.com webmaster.

AVP,

Yup, no messin' around. I bought the camera for professional use, and the 1Ds is the is the only 35 mm digital that meets my needs. (Click on the link below my name to see what kind of photography I do.) I've also been wanting to get in on the fancy technology in the Canon system--though I do miss the superior ergonomics of my old Nikon system.

Firehorse,

You can already set focus with the lens ring. Now just put the camera in all-manual mode, and learn how to partial meter, set aperture and shutter speed, and don't worry about all the buttons which do silly tricks.

Sorry Nimmy but I've got to say it. I was wondering why you wanted to post ANYTHING about your over 40 exam here:eek: when I saw the thread title. You have NO how happy I am that it wasn't that!!!

Evolute, et als, Thanks for the info, links, etcetera.

WetDog1911, My friends house is bayside just a couple hundred feet north of MM88, one of our favorite restaurants in the Upper Keys. We do not, unfortunatley live here, but were blessed with the ability to own a small vacation condo in Tavernier. The family and I usually spend Christmas and Easter in the Keys with a few guy-trips for fishing thrown in throughout the winter while the boat is down here.

Is that not the most beautiful picture you've ever seen?!!! :)

My jaw is laying on the floor. Beautiful pic Nimrod!! Absolutely beautiful!!

Blade Babe, Seeing as I do not invite Marc down any longer, inasmuch as he's busy and stuff, there's plenty of room for you!:D

Nimmy

My Dads place is at MM97. Man e/m me the next time you're down here (there). I know a few spots off the beaten path that are really cool. (Hint look for a parking lot full of rusty pickups or Harleys...depending on your mood,or what you're packing :-))) ). BTW I'm waaaay past 30something so I don't go starting sh!t in biker bars. Still pack tho. Better safe than stomped on.:D
