Hi all,
we are always looking for survival items which have more than one use. So, if you have a knife sharpener, can you use it to produce sparks, or a (larger) flint which can be used for knife sharpening? Maybe there is a new material...
Anybody has experience with this, or anybody ready to do some "base technology research"???

Old style flint and steel required a flint hard enough to actually cut into steel, and brittle enough to flake to a sharp edge capable of cutting. New style flints are the flammable part themselves. I doubt either would function well for sharpening a knife. And if one could, the old style needed occasional re-flaking to keep a sharp edge, and the new style is worn, in an uneven manner, by striking. Neither would keep a very good smooth surface for decent sharpening.
