I kinda thought this was wierd !

The cork is not to replace a sheath, it's to protect the tip of the knife from damage (and damaging whatever it's stored in) for shipping and/or storage.

I always apply "rubber corks" to my knives before putting them in Bill's custom cases for shipping.

*Not to be too much of a prick, but even the knife in the auction you listed is shown with a sheath next to it.* :p

ok .. i guess i learneded me something then ... haha .. never seen or heard of this ,,, then again I dont have a cust knife yet !
I seen the picture with the knife and sheath,, just why not ship it in the sheath ??? Seems a good sheath would protect the point and the blade edge ! thanks for your reply :)

Sheaths are for sissys. I always wear my bowie with a cork on the tip. Doesnt everybody?:)

Now that i read what I wrote and yur reply .. LMAO :)

But really .....Why cork a knife to ship it out ?? Wont a good sheath protect it better then a cork ???

You have a valid point about the cork. All I can think of is that a knife shouldnt not be stored in the sheath because of the chemical reaction from the leather tanning method but it wouldnt hurt it just to ship it in the sheath.

I must be a terrible dumb a$$, but I've never thought of protecting the tip of a knife from it's case before. Now I have a use for all of those Chimay corks I've been saving for panfishing!:D

All my larger knives have corks on the tip to keep them from punching right through the end of the carying case (and into me when I am taking the cases out of the suitcase!)

Never thought about a cork for the tip before, makes sense when having the knife setting around the shop.To bad you can bump the rest of the sharp part and cut the fire outta yourself even with the tip protected.:D

On another note,I always ship in the sheath as it is the safest way to ship the knife without it getting damaged, even when shipping with a carrying case.I have found that leaving a knife in a caring case is not any better than storing it in the sheath. The carrying case will leave little fiber saped rust marks on the blade, dont ask how I know this:eek: just say I know i found out the hard way not to store them like this. All my finished knives stay in a display drawer with a cork back or on a stand in a show case just to save any heart achs....It is a real pain to take a knife out to show a customer and see little rust specs on the blade:o

I hear real men use a cork in the tip! I've never heard of it called a bowie.
