I was visting my Grandma this weekend in Crossville, TN. She is unfortunately fighting an uphill battle with lung cancer and very upset to be confined to an assisted living facility. I was glad to be able to spend some time visiting with her. Anyhow, on my way back this afternoon I was determined not to stop at Smokey Mountain Knife Works as I usually do (largely because of the early release, obnoxious etching, and price gouging :barf:). Nevertheless, I was sucked in by the gravity of that black hole off exit 407 and compelled to buy an overpriced BK15 (at least i didn't have to pay shipping). I needed to spend 80 bucks like I need a pointy stick in the eye, yet I now find myself browsing Azwelke's ebay store for some fresh pants for the new 15. What have you people done to me?

If I lived near a knife shop like that, I would starve to death :D

Yeah its a good thing its 2+ hours away. Its more out of the way than shipping something but i'm visiting family or camping in the Smokies enough to make it a problem. I wanted the BK5 but I wasn't about shell out $20 more than it would cost online with shipping included. Their prices aren't competitive to be honest.

ya shoulda picked up a BK16, held onto it for a few months, and then voila, flip it for $500

Yeah probably should've but i'm a knife user not a speculator. The chance I wouldn't strip, convex, and take it to the woods is slim to none.

Good thing all these knife shops are like 2 days away from me...how do you guys control yourselves?

I'm just lucky not to have -any- knife stores close to me. Walmart is the closest, and there's a couple gunshops starting to sell insanely overpriced Spydercos and Cold Steel.

That's a good thing, because if I had one close I would definately go bankrupt. I don't see how you guys live even within 30 minutes of any knife shop.

Shh, don't tell everyone my plan or they'll ALL do it. Just kidding. I really haven't decided whether I'm gonna flip it for a small, reasonable profit or just hang on to the damn thing for a long time.

I've never had a Becker before, but I'm thinking I might just have to pick one of these up...that's a nice looking knife.

I'm guessing that bit about flipping the 16 is a joke...if not, why would it be worth that much?

Also, what's the difference between regular 1095 and 1095 CroVan? I realize one has Chromium and Vanadium, but what are the functional differences?

Thanks all.

EDIT: Oh, also, 79 dollars seems really reasonable...is it really all that overpriced?

it's really not overpriced for what it is but compared to what it will be sold in full production it is. the 16 is saber ground which some people prefer, as opposed to the full flat production grind. that, coupled with the limited numbers means you will likely be able to sell it for more than was paid down the road.

Ah, okay, gotcha. So is it worth it to pick up a 15 now, or should I wait until production starts? How much are these likely to go for after production begins? I'm not really all that interested in the 16, as the blade shape just doesn't do it for me, but that 15 is a nice looking knife.

Also, I totally get the stopping in at SMKW thing. Each time I've travelled cross country I've stopped in there as a nice little diversion from the road. The prices didn't seem that bad to me honestly.

Yeah I got my Bk2 there and it was about $15-20 more than online, (with shipping) so they're a little steep in my book. I didn't mind since I wanted it that moment :D I doubt the 15 will sell for more than you'd pay at SMKW, it's just the grind on the 16 that makes it unique. Idk how much they'll sell for in production, surely less though. Bladite may have more regarding that.

Yeah, I don't care about resale value...If I'm buying a becker I'm going to use it.

Crossville... that puts you at about exit 320? 317? I'll be in between Crossville and Cookeville in 8 days, and will be making the pilgrimage to exit 407. Last year I stayed at a resort that was 1.5 miles from SMKW, and it was a daily trip. Sometimes, more than once a day.
