A question has arisen regarding my giveaway and the recipients age.

I had considered that question at the beginning and came to the conclusion that if you're old enough to be a BFC member (COPPA Rules) you should be mature enough to own a pocket knife.

I am aware that several members have proven otherwise, but I feel that limiting it to 18 and over wipes out a 5 year demographic spread, one that I think is important not to alienate.

I am conferring with senior members regarding this issue.

Some semi-official input from Spark and the senior mods would be appreciated.

If there is a compelling reason to limit entrants to those 18 and over, I really would like to see it.

Thanks.

PS - When I said it's "Open to all members" I meant just that. I don't care if your username is RGU blue, purple, gold, platinum, orange, green, red, SMod blue or black, by all means, please enter.

Thanks for doing a GAW Al, we appreciate your generosity. I won't enter as I already own 2 of that knife and want someone else to have a chance. As mentioned in the other discussion, your giveaway, your rules.

Alan, I don't pretend to know the legalities but personally, when I've given away knives here for youngsters I've done so via their parents. I'm not comfortable putting myself or the site on the hook.

Lord knows there are enough adults that shouldn't get their hands on anything with an edge on it and that many youngsters are very responsible with knives...that said, discretion is the better part of valor in my view.

Agreed. However, if discretion means excluding the 13 to 18 year-old segment of the the forum, which I assume to be fairly large, where's the valor?

It's true, I've seen 60 year-old babies here get their pampers in a bunch over the most infinitesimal of trivialities, and 13 year-old sages.

I get what you're saying, it's just not a strong enough reason to extirpate what is probably a good percentage of the entries received so far.

But I'm glad I got you to weigh in, thanks....

Well, as I said, I'm not aware of the state by state legalities and only shared how I do it personally. Your giveaway, your rules. As long as it doesn't violate any laws, (or Spark's rules, he can weigh in on that), have fun with it.

How about just getting signature confirmation on the package. Wouldn't that make sure somebody over 18 signs for it?

USPS Adult Signature required - $4.75. Not a problem.

Not sure about the situation if the winner is OCONUS....
