Make your own Velcro backed holster for them!

I made my own Velcro backed holster after being dissatisfied with what was on the market. Anyway, I wanted to get the positive draw and retention from kydex that I have come to like so much and something that covered the trigger guard better than your typical webbing strap type universal holster.

You can see the procedure here: http://jerkingthetrigger.wordpress.com/2010/04/03/tactical-handyman-velcro-backed-holster/

It is a simple process. I am basically just finding a holster that is relatively flat on the back, removing the belt loop, and gluing Velcro to the back of it.

I have been using one of these in a Hawkepaks bag and a ProTech TAC-BAG (same as the SDS version) with great success. I glue Velcro to both sides (front and back) of the holster for the TAC-BAG since it is nice to be able to mount the handgun so the grip is pointed up for what basically amounts to small of back carry (you are much less likely to flag yourself on the draw with the grip up).

The Gorilla Glue works well for me but contact cement would probably be a better choice.

Cool mod Matt. I did something similar with an Uncle Mike's nylon holster. It's pretty much the only use I've ever found for these holsters. Velcro Industrial Strength glued on the back of the holster. It works with several of my handguns (Glock 30 in the picture). I was never a big fan of the Maxped Universal holster.

Link seemed to be buggered for me in the original post.

Neat idea. The universal holster was an idea in the right direction, this carries it forward to the next evolution.

I've currently got an unused Fobus POS holster I got as a trade, it will work perfectly for this. And I really dig the idea of using the Uncle Mike's nylon as well. The Bag will handle the retention, the holster keeps the gun in place. A slip sheath for your purse!

Nice work! I haven't tried it with a soft holster like that.

The reason I went with the soft holster was because I already had it from a long time ago and it was just taking up space in the closet, it can be used with several guns and while it holds the gun well, there's no chance of me going to draw the gun and yanking the bag and the whole 9 yards with it.

Always enjoy your handyman posts, keep 'em coming!

Great idea since I've been looking at a 5.11 Push Pack and I just happened to have a spare kydex holster. Thanks.:)

That's a pretty slick set up, and it's damn easy to do on your own. Hawkepacks does make some really great gear and it's made here in the USA.

Nice mod. I went with the 5.11 holster. it covers the trigger guard completely and has a back strap that snaps over the "hammer". also you can switch around to whatever hand works for you. Fits well in my Kodiak gearslinger and holds my G22 safe and secure.

Great thread Matt.

I am glad to see some feedback on the Maxpedition Universal Holster. I was getting ready to buy one to put in my Monsoon. My first "dust cover" was a cheap Uncle Mike's IWB. And you are right, not much use for that thing. Looks like I am shopping for velcro today at lunch.

Kzoo, I bought mine at the big Wal-Store. If they have it I'd get the "Industrial Strength". It's sticky on the back and didn't even require the use of any glue for over a year. Now I think I migh go ahead and cement it.

Here's what the velcro looks like. I did get the 2" wide as well...
