I know absolutely nothing about brush axes.

It definitely has a primitive homemade look about it, and the blade definitely looks like it may have been forged with a using a hammer.
I just didn't want to call it blacksmith made or homemade, because old tools are often misidentified this way simply because time and rust can give them a forged look.

I've got a TT Kelly Works that has a pretty ugly weld. But the weld is a lot smaller than that. I agree with A17 that looks home made. Still it looks great and perfectly useable! How's the steel for hardness?

It's actually a bit soft, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it.
Maybe I'll order a straight handle along with a house length handle for that dayton from HH and try it out in the backyard.
It seems at the least hard enough to use.

Could make some type of improvised weapon with it,ordered a cocobolo axe handle when I was drunk and have been thinking I need something like to put on it is why I mention it.

I've got some thick overgrown weeds in my backyard, and while this isn't the best steel in the world I think it's hard enough to be functional.
I ordered a House handle for that dayton and a 36" straight handle to try out this brush axe.

I don't like HOUSES full sized fawns foot handles at all so I went with a straight.
Their house handle seems better though and thinning it down will be good practice for the spokeshave I've got coming.

I don't think that's homemade. I have a Charlston Kelly, that's exactly alike. It's a little different to use than a regular axe, but they are pretty effective once you get the feel for it.

It seems like more common are the ones with the handle loop at the back.
