do you think that a medium stockman is worth the asking price of $18? I know this place that is clearing out its Case knives. All of the knives are SS, but I wonder if I should just go and take a chance since everything is 1/2 off.

Heck yeah, depending on the handle material I might even buy a few of them at half off like that.

First of all case ss does not suck it is a mass production stainless that balances edge holding, production cost, and stainlessness. For that price I think you should pick one up and see for yourself how it performs .there are too many people on this forum who jump on the bandwaggon and aussume the opinion of someone they have never met.How about before taking a stand on something you buy it and try it first? Most people sharpen their knives once a week any way so unless you are a butcher,or profesional hunter you probably wont notice as much difference as you think.case knives are usefull and more than enough for 99.9% of knife users.thats my opinion and it is based on personal exprience not popular forum opinion.

$18 bucks sounds great for a SS Case Medium Stockman. I just bought a Case CV medium stockman and I think it is a great knife. However I have experineced some staining on the blade and am curious about the SS version. I have heard that Case SS is 420HC. I have 420HC knives from Kershaw, Buck, and Knife Kits and find that they are easy to sharpen and fairly decent at holding their edge. I would jump on that deal.

I'd buy a Case Stockman for $18, especially if it had a natural handle material. Plus, buying at a physical store you can handle several knives before puchasing to find the one with the best snap and blade fit.

$18? Even if you don't want to use them, you could buy a bunch and sell them. Then buy some CV Cases.

$18 is a good deal IMO.

Case SS doesn't "suck." It just doesn't perform as well as the CV from where I sit. On the plus side though, no patina if a shiny blade is your thing.

You know, Schrade knives have the same kind of SS/carbon steel divide in terms of production, but the folks on the Schrade forum don't seem to knock the SS (Schrade+) knives in this manner. Wonder why.

I thought I would add my two cents as a first post on the forums. I agree with Guyon, Case SS is good stuff, just not as great as their CV, which I really like. That being said, in my part of the world (Texas), for EDC I alternate Case stockmen-CV in the winter and SS in the summer. But for $18 how could you go far wrong with an American made knife?

Excellent first post and welcome.

Hey, I probably would. Im not a fan of their SS, but it works okay, it just isnt the best steel. That does not mean they are not worth having, or using. One of my favorites is a case brothers chestnut sowbelly :)
