I have 4 Spyderco knives, my first one was a calypso jr, SE....I liked it, not too keen on the serrated edge but it cut like crazy, next I got an endura CE, a salsa and a S30v Native. The knives I tend to use the most are the Native because it holds such an edge and the Endura because it just feel "right" in your hands. I would like to carry the Calypso but the serrations got dull and I couldn't sharpen it, so I tried my best to sharpen it (no sharpmaker....just look alike products) and still didn't do as good as when I got it.

So...(and this is where you fry me) I decided to sharpen the SE off and make it a plain edge, after an hour of work it's pretty good for a transition, right now it's almost plain edge, kind like a very sharp scalloped edge. I had asked spyderco months ago about my unhapiness about the SE and if I could swap it for a PE and they don't me they couldn't do it because the knife isn't made in thier colorado factory. So I have had it just sitting on a shelf and I decided....ohhh heck, let's try this. And The results are better than the dull knife I had before, cuts like a crazy thing now, as good as my native LOL in a wierd way. Anyways, let the bashing of OH MY GOD YOU KILLED IT posts come forth, I deserve it.

Naw, no foul IMHU. I have seriously thought about this myself with an older Delica SE user, but never wanted to put the effort into it. I just got a SS PE instead.......

They are easy enough to come by, I'd say go for it, it's your knife.:D

Hi David.

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Sorry you didn't like our serrated edge. Glad you ended up with something you like.

"Swapping out blades" on lock-backs is much harder than it seems and could likely cost more than would seem practical.

Though I will admit there is much "fire" in this forum, it is rarely used for flaming".

Assuming you can re-sharpen, serrated edges do have areas where they excel and those that need a knife for those areas get good service from teeth. Eg: If I'm on a boat, I carry teeth.

Hope you enjoy your time here.

Not to be a wise a$$, but if it was just about getting it sharp, you know, you could have just sent the Delica back to Spyderco for complimentary sharpening (for $5 shipping) :p ....or you could have bought a Sharpmaker :D . The sharpmaker really works, even on serrated blades.

It's your knife - if you want to grind it down to a toothpick it's up to you. Many people grind the edges off some models to make trainers where a production trainer isn't available. (Sal even has Mosquitos made on purpose)

However, if you did this then tried to blame Spyderco for the poor quality edge that resulted and demand it be replaced under warranty - you might expect flames then :D

no, quite a reasonable move actually. i got 2 SE spyderco's as well, and i wish i was wiser at the time when i bought them so i could have purchased them plain edged instead. i only like the serrations for the first 10 minutes of cutting with it, factory edge, but after that i find that they dull easier than PE's and that sharpening them evenly is a pain because of the chisel grind.

plain edge forever!

Thanks guys, and yes it's NOTHING against spyderco, they make awesome knives and they hold and edge like none other. I just couldn't do with a dull SE and I tried to sharpen it but I was doing more damage than good, I am just so use to plain edges so I figured....why not. It's not as plain edge as it will be right now, but the scallops are kind of neat because unlike the chisel grind it's now like a regular grind on both sides but one side has the scallops, I will try and post a pic. The teeth on a SE just seemed to bind more than cut, course when it was new it didn't do that :) I have tried it on cardboard and all kinds of material within reach that could be cut and it (the knife) likes it....hehe I wish I had the money to buy me one of those gray Calypso Jr's in PE....maybe, who knows.

If it's your knife, why not get it the way you like it. I'll probably do the same with mine too. Serrations are difficult to sharpen without the proper tools.

Hi,
I bought a yellow Mariner SE when they first came out.I had it and used for a quite some time.A guy I worked with said that would be neat with a chisel grind.Well I had the serrations removed for a chisel grind.Later I put a v grind on the knife.I still have it in my truck and use it sometime's.Nice and sharp edge and is well broken in.
One time with this Mariner I was crouched down and flipped open and it hit my leg I got 3 in and 3 stiches out that time.
In answer to your post do what you feel is good or right for you.
Take Care,
Pete

Sounds like a Granton edge.

OK, I'll fess up too. My first Spydie was an Endura, bought 14 years ago. I too found the serrations difficult to sharpen, and I've always liked a sharp edge, so the serrations went. The bevels look a mess, but I didn't want to thin the edge too much. Might clean it up a bit more one day.

It's still sharp enough to shave the hair from my arm! Just last year it got the Boye dent treatment, too.

No need to be embarrased. I f...ed up a Meerkat trying to make a hawkbill out of that reversed "S" blade (It didn't work, BTW).
You can get a new Calypso jr. in PE. Now they come in a cool gray FRN

OHMYGODYOUKILLEDIT!!!

:D

Actually, that's a pretty good idea. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the knuts on this forum scooped up some of the original serrated Calypsos (which are much easier to come by than PE) and did some of their own modifications. In fact, I saw an ad just a few days ago...... :D

Thanks for this thread and letting us know about the closeout on the Grey Calypso Jr.s. I have 2 on their way to me this week!
