I know I said I was downsizing and I am. Over the last three months I’ve sold of most of my collection here and on EBay. But in recently struck me that I’ve never owned an automatic knife. In NY they are illegal accept for LE, other first responders and other limited situations so…

When the box came today and I told my wife what it was she gave me the look and said “I thought you were downsizing?”. I explained to her the math and opened the box…

It’s a Benchmade Mini-Claymore, my first automatic knife and a beauty IMHO. The fit and finish is excellent and what I would expect from Benchmade. The action is very fast, the lock is sturdy with no play in the blade when locked, the safety is very positive and the blade finish is very nice.

It’s sort of strange that in the 25+ years I’ve been heavily involved in knifes in training and as a hobby I never handed an automatic knife. As far as tactic advantage, I don’t see it given I have other folding knives I can draw and open as fast as I can deploy the Mini-Claymore. This is especially true if carried with the safety engaged. But it does have a cool factor to it.

One last thing, kudos to EKnives in Tennessee. I had been check reviews on the knife and searching the web found they had one that said “in stock”. There have been situations where “in stock” meant in stock at some distributor somewhere. I placed the order online Friday evening, got an acknowledgment email immediately advising they would let me know when the knife was shipped.

I sent a follow up email on Sunday evening and got a response early on Monday letting me know the order would be shipped that day. On Wednesday the box arrived with the Benchmade box inside, a little Snickers bar and a EKnives sticker inside. My wife enjoyed the chocolate while I enjoyed handling the knife for the first time.
