I learned aerial throws.... woot

Nice videos.

I can see from your horizontal, vertical and aerial that you move your arms too much. Try to move your hands and wrist only and lessen arm movement. That will definitely look better.

Aaaaa!

Don't worry about the arm movement. It'll get more subtle over time.

Batangueno, I hate to disagree with you on this one bud, but if you freeze frame his vids you'll see that the latch is also not getting in his way.

The added force being exerted outward (from the extra arm movement) is keeping the latch pointing straight out from the handle.

Following through with that movement also prevents the latch from folding "IN" on you and hitting the blade when closing (or being sandwiched between the handles when opening).

I consider this a pretty important (but subtle) technical point.

I would be very interested in hearing other views on this and whether you agree or disagree.

Because......
getting 'em open
is half the fun!

dont forget to learn the arial close, its pretty tough.

also, i love the arial toss to a backhand open. (when u end up with your arm up like u are about to throw a ball with the bali in the backhand grip with blade facing forward)

keep up the good work...u are doin great, it took me forever to learn what u have accomplished in a few weeks

Hah thanks for all the tips everybody... I'm getting better at the aerial close now too... Actually i've only had my bali 5 days. Anyway, yeah, thanks a lot on the tips. I'm using a sony TRV320 digital8 camera and a dazzle DV firewire card... I'll work on moving my hand less : )-

I agree with Clay, the movements will get smooth over time. You can try different movements with the hand and arm to see what moves work well for each manipulation...it's all up to you which ones you want to use.

You kinda remind me of me & the gang back in the old days. When we started off,we only knew one move, and that's because the owner of the store only knew that one.Five days later we had about 17 moves developed, and were in the process of getting them smoothed out (becoming second nature).
Ahh...I miss those days...

Actually,it didn't really slow for quite a while. We were constantly looking at new ways to do things, trying to develop new moves that would be a pain in the arse for others to do,trying to make something only the originator could do,making things that showed off the dexterity of the fingers..etc.
Then,we stopped getting fresh ideas,so we stopped for a while, thinking that if we took enough time off,we could come back with a fresh perspective.
It was after 2 years of playing with the balisongs when we stopped trying to create stuff.Shortly after that, most of the guys moved away...including me.Every now & then I still create stuff, but it just doesn't feel the same without the old bunch o'loonies.Especially since I don't have anyone that I can show the new stuff to as soon as it's created...so that they can learn it.
I've only found a few people here in Michigan that have had the interest inthe balisongs to learn whatever I could teach them...and only one has managed to learn everything that I know. But,I lost touch with him back in the mid 90's.
Oh well,life goes on...

Ya should get a web cam or sumpin and put vids of your tricks on the web... I know there are some balisong vid makers out there, but there's always room for more.. I mean, i know with yoyoing, once people started putting their trick vids online, creativity boomed and yoyoing went through a huge revolution... I mean, some insane stuff started happening, just because people could share their tricks.-

Well,Clay has some of the ones we did,and I haven't really looked thru all the ones on balisong.com yet,but I know they've got some of the others. One of these days I actually need to sit down and remind myself of some of the ones I haven't done in years.
I'm still pretty much comp illiterate, although I am learning...but right now I can't afford to do the webcam. This old hunk o'junk probably wouldn't even want to work with a cam if I did have one.
Who knows..one of these days,perhaps...

ever use a yo-yo for self defense?? that is what they were originally made for right? u coudl have a yoyo in one hand and a bali in the other...the best of mid and close range hand to hand combat.

just a thought

Haha... Well i don't beleive the rumor that the yoyo was invented for self defense.. It's always been a toy, dating back to 500 BC. Anyway, you *could* use a yoyo for self defense, but the spin would be dead if you hit somebody hard, and although my aluminum yoyos would fair well, you'd be better with a rock tied to a string : )... And ya can't really yoyo and bali at the same time, because all the good tricks use 2 hands... Only think a bali is good for with yoyos is cutting a string : )-
