I was just wondering if any of you all like Country (and Western) music. Since I discovered Pandora Music I've really been enjoying all the new (and really awesome) country music that's out there.
Folks like Hank III, The Drive-by truckers, Tim Hus, 1100 Springs, Cord Lund, Shooter Jennings, Whitney Morgan and the 78's. And of course the classics like Willie and Merle and Hank and Hank II, David Allen Coe, Charlie Daniels Band, Johnny Cash, Buck Owens etc etc.

Are there any really underground Country and Western singers/bands that I'm missing out on? I also really like female singers but I don't tend to hear of lot of them.

You should check out Jamie Johnson (not a chick). As for female artist check out Lemon Drop by Pistol Annies

Most all my favorites are "roots" or "alternative" artists that have country roots.
If you like great songwriting, try Guy Clark, Tom Russell, James McMurtry, Gurf Morlix, etc, etc.

As well, for great pickin', a lot of the more progressive bluegrass or "newgrass" guys like Sam Bush, Nickel Creek, and half-a-dozen more.

Thanks. I do listen to some Jamie Johnson.

I'm checking out James McMurty and the Heartless Bastards right now.

Ray Wylie Hubbard, Townes Van Zant, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Fred Eaglesmith, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Charlie Robison.

that oughta keep you busy for awhile.

Lucero, Wilco, Nine Pound Hammer, X, the beat farmers, the Knitters (1/2 of X)...but the good half.
Roots.... start with Townes Van Zandt.
girls....the be good tanyas.

type in cowpunk on Pandora?
I don't use it, so I don't know if it is very mainstream?

I hate mainstream modern country music. It's about as country as rap. Love the old school stuff. Bluegrass is awesome also. Great thread!

Long live CASH!

You all are reminding me of folks that I forgot about. Townes Van Zant is good stuff. I very much enjoy Steve Earle.

I grew up listening to Merle, Patsy, and other greats from that era. For the most part, I can't handle the current so called Country artists.
To may of them are just relabeled Pop singers, that crossed the fence for monetary reasons. I'd be willing to bet most of them don't even know which side of a horse you should get on.

There are a few that I like though.

Lucinda Williams is a fantastic artist who seems to get very little mainstream airplay. Her album Car Tires on a Gravel Road is amazing. Theses are not females but check out The Old '97's The Steel Drivers are good, for Bluegrass, another more traditional Bluegrass Band is IIIrd Tyme Out (said third time out). I also like Robert Earl Keen really good singer songwriter.

I do like the old 97's and the steel drivers! Lucinda Williams sounds familiar. I'll look her up.

As far at the current main stream "country", it's not. It's pop music and nearly all the folks who sing it are completely fabricated. I might as well listen to the back street boys.

devil makes three also worth a look. old crow medicine show as well. mike ness solo stuff. graham parsons.
i completely forgot about Mike Ness solo stuff his cover of Long Black Veil is fantastic (I may like it better than Cash's). You may even want to check out Social Distortions 99 to Life album several of those songs have a rockabilly type of swing to them!

Old Crow Medicine Show, Cadillac Sky, Chris Knight, Corey Smith, Reckless Kelly, the Von Ehrics...from just looking through my phone.

Billy Joe Shaver, Uncle Tupelo, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Todd Snyder, James Mcmurtry and Ray Wylie Hubbard Plenty of diversity there.

Ryan Bingham, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Chris Knight, Hank III, Stony Larue, get me going. Sorry for the repeats, but I added a couple of new names too.
