Decided to satin the spine on the SAR 5 tonight. A quick bit of work and she's done. I really like this knife though, it's a great size, feels comfortable in the hand  and does pretty much anything. Plus with a nicely reprofiled edge (40 degrees inclusive :D) it's a SLICER and a CHOPPER! It does it all, the Ron Popeil of SAR! Ok, maybe it's doesn't chop that great, but for it's size, it's awesome. The ability to choke up a bit really gives a good grip and serious cutting strength.
With all that though, I used black shoe polish on the handle and love the look. Can I use something else more permanent on the handle? A spray paint of some kind perhaps? Mmmm, or send it to uparmor for handle decoration? Or black G10's? Hmmmm.
'Scuse the dust on the table.

Looks great MrClean, what did you use to reprofile the edge, and what angle was it at to begin with?

Leather dye will likely keep the color dark for longer. I've yet to do any of my knives with it, but have read here that it penetrates the canvas fibers really well.

You didn't give us a polished spine shot. :(

I used a Sharpmaker with diamond rods to do the dirty work, then to medium, then fine, then .5 micron strop, then fitz strop.
If I had to guess, I would say the angle from the shop was right at 50. It didn't take long at all to do.

Spine shot comin' later! I think I'm going to do a little more work on her today. It's got a rough look to it now that I kind of like but I might be too much of a perfectionist to leave it like that!

Here we go! If anyone's going to do it I'd say just use sandpaper on a block, put the block on a level surface and have at it. A Dremel on low will do the bulk of the work but if you leave it in one place for a split second too long, or you have it up too high, you'll have your work cut out for you I imagine. I used 150 strips and kept rubbing till it was about 400 grit.

Nice!

I need to use my SAR5 more. Not sure if it's a BA (BA3 to be specific) but it sure is a nice blade.

Matteo said it was "the new BA." When I think BA, I think BA3/ABA. While I love my BATAC, the BA3 was probably perfection in the design.

The SAR5 is a great blade, but no BA3.

I for one really wish I had had the scratch to jump on this knife when it was offered for a stupid low price. I could really use one this size and weight.

You just gotta wait for a "reasonable" price or a good Hog to take care of ya. The aftermarket mark up that some are tryin' to make is crazy.

308Sniper got back to me, 35 + 15 return shipping to coat the handles. Very tempting!

I did it again, on the way out to the trail to walk the dogs, I grabbed the SAR5, it's the perfect trail knife.

I have a CPABA (.150) and a DABA (.160), and I've owned BA3s. The BA3s I had were .250" and didn't seem to scale to the size of the knife.

The 3/16 on the SAR5 seems about the right thickness for a 5" blade. I thought the Anorexics were a tad thin for my idea of a hard use knife.

Ok, flame away :D

No flames, bruh. It's all about what works best for the individual, right? That's why it's great that Jerry makes so many different shapes and styles of knife. There's INFI for everyone. Except those who carry folders.:grumpy:
