Being a true perfectionist and one who appreciates, no CRAVES objects of extreme precision and truly exceptional quality, when i happened to start watching a show, on The Learning Channel i think it was, i became very interested in the subject of the show, which was the various, famous Faberge eggs that were made for Czar Nicholas of Russia.
The show spent a great deal of effort explaining and showing you how incredibly ornate and beautifully made these little wonders were, and why they fetch so much money at auctions. They were made completely by hand using the absolute finest materials, and put together by true craftsmen working at a careful snail's pace to ensure absolute perfection at every step, the best craftsmen in the world worked on these objects, and the result were these eggs that by most accounts possessed a level of detail, workmanship and beauty rarely if ever found on any other man made object in history. There really is a reason they auction off for so much money, they really were/are THAT good.
So, naturally these perfect, beautifully adorned eggs appealed to my keen sense of perfection, and my love of anything made to the absolute highest possible levels of quality with the finest materials. But then, as i watched the show, i realized that objects such as these, made the way they were, really no longer exist in our mass produced world of flimsy, disposable goods, or do they. It just hit me that the best custom knives may well be the closest one can get to experiencing the joy of holding and owning a Faberge egg, i think that possibly a great custom knife is a modern day "Egg", made nearly to the same incredibly high, almost supernaturally high standards that the Faberge Eggs were, which made them so famous and sought after throughout history.
Now, personally, i cant afford a $250,000 egg, but there are an awful lot of beautiful knives out there for $1000-$10,000, and they may just be the closest we can come in our modern day world to owning something of a quality so rare, of such exceptional workamnship, that it remains ledgendary and so fiercely sought after, these custom knives may be the Faberge Eggs of tomorrow. Just a thought.
