I like the stag on this...

GEC Northfield Barlow. I don't have many stag knives, but this one feels really good in my hand. I find myself reaching into my pocket just to feel it while I'm out and about. I guess this means I like really gnarly textured stag. Just thought I'd share because I like this one so much. Do you have a favorite gnarled stag-handled knife?

Thats one of the main reasons I got back into traditional slipjoints. I can't resist stag that purdy, thanks for sharing.

Wow that is gorgeous stag!!! I think I just drooled a little on my keyboard. And I must say those were some nice shots of your barlow, thank you for sharing those. I think it just pushed me over the edge. I have been wanting a Northfield stag barlow, and after seeing yours close up like that, I feel an order coming on! Enjoy that one, it sure is pretty.

Beautiful knife, I have a Northfield #54 Whittler in Sambar Stag. I don't know of any other company that goes as far as GEC does in matching their stag handle slabs. That along with their near flawless F&F makes Northfield my favorite brand.

I'm sorry but I suffer from PTDD (Photographic Talent Deficiency Disorder).
 
I've already got a Tidioute barlow in buffalo horn, so I doubt I'll get another of the size. The Cuban Stockman and the Whittler have caught my eye, though, and they're available in stag (if memory serves). If they had one of those #73 jack knives available in stag, I would be hard pressed not to order one.
 
That's some gorgeous stag on that Barlow Mikeymoto. Wow your images are excellent. They really pop.

Stag is by far my favorite handle material. Here's some from Hiroaki Ohta that make their way into my pocket regularly:

The STAG on my GEC Barlow is outstanding, might even be better than anybody's....the rest of the fit&finish is arresting too,VERY grippy and phat..

We've seriously got to have a chat with some of the Japanese slipjoint makers about where they get their stag -- several of them use some of the most awesome stag I've seen in modern times. Ryuichi Kawamura always uses absolutely stunning stag -- and it's thin and extremely well fitted, just like it should be.

I have a few Stag GEC's (none as nice as MikeyMoto's :thumbup:) and with embargo still in place it really is hard to locate on today's market.

I too wonder if the Japanese Makers stocked up years ago? But finding good Stag for a slipjoint is a bit easier than trying to locate some for a fixed blade.

Well, yes and no -- while it makes it easier since the pieces needed are quite a bit smaller and thinner, it makes it harder to get really spectacular pieces for a slipjoint since you need finely and rather evenly patterned pieces that are reasonably "flat" (I'm talking about what you'll see on an Ohta or Kawamura or PJ Tomes folder) -- while you can get away with a fairly gnarly, irregular piece on a fixed blade, since you don't have to fit such tight constraints. (The old Sheffield makers solved part of this by actually reshaping rough cut stag pieces somewhat to suit the pattern they were to be used on. One reason why their stag scales always fit so precisely with so little ground away -- needless to say, doing this was a highly skilled profession in itself.)

Drooling already guys. Such beauties. I really like pop corn stag. I heard Jackknife mention once that women dig gnarly stag. I can't wait for my BFC MMIX to show off for the ladies.

I have a GEC #53 stockman that has some grippy burnt stag on the pile side. The mark side is a bit smoother but still nice. Knife has great F & F and walk and talk, too!

Great knife there mikeymoto! Those pics are awesome as well. I like my GEC knife as well. They offer a really great value.
