I looked at a Buck Slip joint for the first time...

Today my son and I went Christmas shopping. While we were out, we had to go to Sportsmans Warehouse :D

Actually it is called Wholesale Sports or something like that now. Anyway, when it was SW they had a great selection of knives, from quite a few different companies.

When we walked back to where the knife section use to be, I was in shock...
They had gotten rid of probably close to half, or more of the knives.

Anyway, they still have a great selection of Bucks, and they had the slip joints on display in the case. I have recently taken notice of the Buck slip joints, and am going to get a 301.
I have to admit, I was always a little put off by the plain black scales, and am planning on getting the Charcoal version, or possibly the yellow.

When I saw the black knives sitting in the case, I found my preconceived dislike for the black, was wrong. They look great.
It made me feel even better when I saw the U.S.A tang stamp.

I didn't buy one though, because their prices have gone up quite a bit, and with work being slow, like a lot of folks, I'm looking to save where ever I can.

I will probably be ordering one in the next couple days, and can't wait to get one in hand. I've always focused on Case slip joints, but I'm not sure why I waited so long to give the Buck a try...

Sorry for the long post, but I'm still excited after looking at them

good choice. i haven't seen the other scale options in person yet. but theres just something about the classic black delrin that's appealing.

Don't forget, the knives on the Buck website are 40% off if you use the discount MERRY2010. But also remember it takes $50 purchase to get free shipping. The sawcut black scale 301 would come in a $30.....don't think a 310 is on there.....

Thanks 300. It may be a good time to order a charcoal and yellow 301 off of their website

BTW, thanks for pointing out my typo. I don't remember seeing any 310's either :D

338375, Be sure to post some pics of your new 301 when you get one... I have a few of them and they are a very nice knife to have... But I still need to get me a yellow handle one... ITE ...

Will do ITE.. Glad to hear you like yours.
I've noticed a few online that come with a small leather sheath that clips onto a belt, or clips onto a pocket, so the sheath could ride in pocket I guess... I don't know that I would ever use it, but its a nice touch.

The yellow is nice. It reminds me of when I was younger. I always thought that slip joints were all yellow, whether they were made by Case or Schrade.
Boy was I missing the boat :D I guess it really didn't matter much though, because being a young kid, I didn't have a lot of extra money to buy stuff.

Last night I ordered a 301 with black handles . At this time of year I usually order the 300 series to give as gifts . Relatives and friends love them . Last year it was the Chairman of the Board Series . Those were a big hit . DM

You can find them in cherry wood too if you dig around. There's a thread about favorite stockman going that has a pic in it.

I just dug up and cleaned and sharpened an old Craftsman large stockman I have had for years. Been carrying it around lately. Now that I know how to sharpen a lot more properly, turns out it's a lot more useful heh.

Someones going to be very happy David. I was thinking of picking one up for my son Travis, but he going through a stage where he keeps misplacing things. So I'm thinking maybe yellow would be a good choice for him :D

The Cherry wood are nice too. If its old enough, your Craftsman was probably made by Schrade. The old Schrades have 1095 steel, and take a great edge.

Yup that was the one.

The Craftsman is not 'that' old, from the 80's marked 95204. If any of you know what the origin is, I'd be curious. It's marked Craftsman and stainless on the largest blade.

Very solidly made with excellent snap and retention on the blades and the fit and finish is actually nice too.

It does take a hell of an edge though. With stropping, it's like a scalpel and I'm not even done cleaning up the edges fully yet.

kingsqueak, I believe that most Craftsman knives were made by Camillus. That is the early ones.

You can't go wrong with an American made Buck in the 300 series. When I first started collection I had no direction, until I bought my first 301 Stockman. I have probably 20 or more 301s and many, many more in the 300 series. They are good old fashion traditional knives that can handle what ever you through at them. There are big ones and small ones and every thing in the middle. I love them, and cant get enough of them. I am impressed with every one I hold.
