Friday night I came up with the insane idea of making a small ax.....from D2.:barf:

I have no idea how many belts I've gone through and I ruined three carbide end mills but it's finished and a friend who owns a heat treating operation Heat treated it today. WHAT A NIGHTMARE...WHAT AN AX HEAD.

I'm working on the final grind and the handle now.
The handle is Birds eye maple.

Yep...one solid nasty piece of D2.

I have no idea how it throws yet. I still haven't finished grinding it.

The head will be finished by tomorrow and the handle should be done on Wednesday...assuming I get time to work on it. I'm not real sure I want to throw my Birdseye handle anyway.

It looks like it turned out real nice Peter! I must say you are a glutton for punishment using D2 (1.5 C). I have never used anything over .8% carbon for any hawks or axes. With the 12% chromium you will have a little more rust protection on it.

Be sure to post pics of the finished handle. I love the birdseye woods.

That is SWEET! I really like the unusual shape of the handle.

Now you need to make a nice little hatchet and a huge, thick splitting maul, ya know, just to round out the set.

Here is the finished hatchet Shotgunner.

I just started this one, do you think it qualifies as a splitting maul, it's 1/2" thick.

Thanks Suzanne but it's sort of a hatchet. I've been playing with prototypes for small hunting hatchets lately. the one in the following picture was easy to carry while hunting, but a little too light, so I trash canned it.

The other day I saw a post here showing a nice solid handle hatchet with a usable point...so I started playing with designs. That's what I came up with.
The holes in the handle are for moldable vibration absorbing rubber that a friend has. We'll see if it works.

OH the Birdseye maple is finished with my homemade version of Aquafortis.

That is fantastic, I really like the way the handle is almost flush with the flats of the head. Very nice.
