I know I've stated this in the past, but if Kershaw offered a non-A/O version, I'd definitely pick one up. I just can't warm up to A/O knives (not that I think SpeedSafe itself is a poor system), and since learning that removing the torsion bar would also eliminate the closed detent, I'm likely going to be passing on this one. :(

That was pretty smart to buy two. Now when one of them gets dull in about ten years you can just throw it away and start using the other one. :D

I bought mine on Saturday, got confirmation that it was shipped today. Now all I have to do is somehow make it to Wednesday, when it will probably arrive.

Why would the removing the torsion bar eliminate the detent? There is still a ball bearing in the framelock that hold the blade closed.

According to the information I was presented with in this thread, the torsion bar provides the detent, and there is no ball bearing. I'd be pleased to find a 100% definitive answer to this issue, though.

As the song goes, "the waiting is the hardest part."

:D I love that moment when I see my knife package in the mailbox. I am so happy as I walk back to the house. I actually have to decide which knife to open the package. I also take a very long time to open the package, relishing the anticipation of holding my new knife! :D

Am I sick?:p

Wait a minute... That's NOT normal behavior???

The torsion bar is on the opposite side of the framelock. There is a ball bearing in the framelock that acts as the detent. I am looking at it right now. Now you must go right out and get one of these!:)

I had a Kershaw Leek and snapped my torsion bar about 2 weeks ago, removed it and the knife opened like crazy. If it was unlocked and I jiggled my wrist, it should shoot open. I have a sliding lock on my leek to hold it shut and I wasn't really paying attention to which exact kershaw with A/O you were talking about but I'm pretty sure removing the torsion bar would create an undesired effect. My blade had NO BIAS towards closure at all, which aside from making it really easy to open it in a very sickass fashion, made it very illegal. I don't think removing the bar on a Kershaw A/O is what you want to do, I'd test it on a friend's if you know any1 that has one.

Looking at my ZDP Leek, I can see that there is a ball in the frame lock, but there is no hole for the ball to go into on the blade. It looks like the ball is there to keep the frame lock from rubbing on the blade, rather than as a detent to hold it closed.

Not having had the opportunity to inspect one myself, that is exactly what I was envisioning. Oh well...

Thomas, Craig, can we look forward to some non-A/O Kershaws in the future? Please?

Check out the Kershaw Junk Yard Dawg and the Kershaw Groove! Both Sandvik 13C26 Steel and manual flippers. JYD is also a framelock I believe! They come out in the next month or so.

Padawan, it looks as if Jeremy beat me to the answer. There will be 2 Junk Yard Dawgs, and an RJ Martin Groove that will be manual Kershaws for this coming fall.

Thomas, I wasn't trying to step on your toes or speak for you, I just happened to have an answer for Padawan. Today I had less work than time for a change:)

And any excuse to talk about Kershaws!

Jeremy
