I Love Small Towns - A Becker Story

I am originally from Dallas so it took me a few years to get used to the small town my college is in. But I must say, I love small towns because of days like today.

I was in class this morning when I decided to check the tracking info on my Becker BK2 that was in transit. The knife wasn't supposed to be delivered till tomorrow but I thought I would check anyways. I looked up the number on the USPS website and it said it was out for delivery. I immediately became very excited as this is my first Becker and I was going to be getting it a day earlier than expected. I checked it again a few minutes before my last class of the day got out and I noticed that it said "Undeliverable as addressed". This had happened a few times before as we just put up a mailbox at our house this year. In fact, we are the first mailbox on our whole street haha. The problem was though that since our house is on the end of the street, new or substitute postal delivery workers would get confused and see no mailboxes at the front of the street and mark the package as undeliverable. The last time this happened they said they had it posted in the back that mail was actually deliverable and that it wouldn't happen again, but today it did.

I went by the post office on my way home fearing that they had already sent it back to the sender. Our small post office only has two or three desk workers (or whatever the technical term is) and one of them happens to go to my church. I was next in line and the person in front of me was mailing quite a few packages so the worker that goes to my church opened up the other lane and told me he would help me. I explained what happened and he wrote down the tracking info and went to the back. He came back a few minutes later saying that the package was marked undeliverable but someone in the back noticed it was addressed to me and that they put it back on the truck and out for delivery. He explained that the post office was closing but it should be on the way to my house but if it wasn't there when I got home in a few minutes that he would be there until 5:30 and if I rang the front buzzer he could come out and give me the package. He also said that if it comes back and is still there when he leaves that he could delivery it to me on his way home (he lives nearby).

Now, I don't know if that is against postal regulation or whatever but I don't care. That is a postal employee going above and beyond what is required. There have been many times in Dallas where packages were lost or what have you and the postal worker basically told me to go f my self. I find it very cool that I live in such a small town that the postal workers know me (even the one that doesn't go to my church) but that might just be because I order alot of stuff :D.

Anyways, I go home and sure enough the package is on my front porch. I opened it up to find my beautiful new BK2. I messed around in the woodpile so it already has some love scratches. :D

I am glad to live in a small town of honest hardworking people. I am also glad that the Bk2 made it to it's new home safe and sound a whole day early. I can't wait for my BK11 to get in tomorrow.

Anyone else enjoy a small town life?

I feel you man, I grew up in somewhat of a small town (twinstick can vouch for that ;) ) It definitely has its positives to it. Glad to hear you got your new toy safe and sound, looks like you are already putting it to some good use!

Cool story and I'm glad she found her way home to you. Maybe its just Becker luck, I had a very similar experience getting my 7. Didn't update my addy on paypal after I moved . I was also able to call and talk to a nice lady at the post office and she let me come after they had already closed( it was a saturday) and she met me in back at the loading dock. I didn't expect that. Congrats on your new blade bro.

Brings a tear to me eye!!
Yes, I love small towns, I grew up in a city of around 100,000 people not very far from New York City, I recently lived in a small town in New Hampshire that was less than 3,000 people and I will be moving in a few months to a town with less than 500 people. That will be paradise!!! No traffic, Yes!!!!
Oh, Beckers, I just got my first a week or so ago, A BK-2 and 2 new ones came today, A BK-10 LE and a BK-11CSM.
Here's a couple pics of the family.

Thanks for reading my rant/story fellas. I am glad that you can relate in my new found (within the past few years) small town pride haha.

That's a cool story s7brad about the nice postal worker. It's good to hear that there are more out there.

Paradise indeed. We have around 15k or so but it's still small to me. Our "rush hour" consists of your commune taking an extra 10-15 minutes if you are on the main 'strip' in town otherwise you aren't really affected unless you drive by the school. I remember in Dallas where I could be stuck in traffic and only go a mile in 30 minutes to an hour.

The people are just different out here, but it's a good different. I love it man and there are quite a few national parks etc. around here that have great hiking and camping spots.

I love the family picture! Take pictures of the little one now, he will be all grown up before you know it haha. I was eyeing a BK-11CSM but decided to get the regular BK-11 and the BK-2 for pretty much the same price. I needed some fixed blades so it worked out perfectly.

I live in in a county with population of about 140,000. The city I live outside of has a population of about 40,000. The main city post office is about a mile from my office. The workers there are mostly jerks. I now travel about 15 miles to a small town, population of about 8,500, and use the post office there. The workers there are the nicest!

Ever heard the expression to "make a long story short?"

I miss the small town life :( I grew up in a small town and now live in NYC :grumpy:.. Congrats on the steel!

Twenty plus years ago I had a UPS driver bring a package to my workplace instead of the house because it needed a signature and he knew I wouldn't be home. I think it was a Cold Steel SRK.

It sure is great. My sister actually lives in NYC now. I don't get how you or her can do it haha. Way too many people for me. However, I like to visit every so often and love NYC for the time I am there.

Wow, there are some good people left in the world. It's great to hear these kinds of stories.

I live in the small town I was born and raised in. The local hardware store saw me whenever I had the hankerin' for a new Case knife or a new Old Hickory butcher knife (bit of grinding, new handle, guard and sheath and you have a nice Bowie) to modify before they closed. They did take over the local Ace hardware though.
