Something I really love about this forum is that people here have a martial and practical attitude towards blades. Blades here are something to be used and not to be looked at! Please do not take me wrong here, I have a big collection of antique and production and custom swords and daggers, but I can imagine that in a battle my life is much important than my katana dating from 15 century! I know that we do not use swords anymore, however, let's face it, swords and knives are there to cut and perform not be adored only.

Reminds me of when I tried to sell a very old brass instrument in need of repair. It was unplayable and I asked an 'expert' whether I should make it playable. He said 'NO! leave it in whatever state it's in'. I pondered this, and decided to get it restored. An instrument 'wants' to be played.
Likewise, a knife or sword 'wants' to be used. Its whole purpose of existance is to cut and be used. Otherwise it's like having a stradivarius and putting it in a bank vault. Sad sad sad.

I agree with you guys. I am from the "use it or why have it" school of thought. My other big hobby is guitars. I have seen $25,000 Fenders and Gibsons that sit behind glass unplayed. It is a crying shame to me. These objects, be they instruments, swords or knives where created to by used. Functional art as it were.

I agree. All of our toys, tools and accomodations are eventually characterized by either form or function. It is ridiculous to admire only the form and ignore the function.

BTW, Manoucher, you have surely seen enough to realize that our group runs from studiously serious, through whimsically humourous to plain lunacy. Welcome among us, and jump in at any place that takes your fancy

I agree wholeheartedly. If someone buys a blade that is meant for serious work and then hangs it on a wall and never uses it they've just wasted a perfectly good knife. Of course if they have more knives than they could possibly hope to use...

P.S. Welcome to the forum Manoucher.

Welcome to the Cantina Manoucher!!!!

I am very much in favor of using beautiful blades for utilty and mundane tasks!!!
Much better to use them and know what you have rather than let them hang on the wall and perhaps going someday to your kids or other relatives to use after we're
gone.

There is just a certain satisfaction in using my YCS with her and her karda's inlayed handles and silver furniture for any and all tasks she is capable of.
